29th June – Rangiriri and Te Kauwahata
countryside
We
will commence our journey north with a stop for morning tea
at the lovely
Hakanoa
Lake
. We then
continue north to the settlement of Rangiriri, which in
1863, during the land wars, was the scene of a bloody
encounter between British troops and Maoris. A short movie
will be shown at the Heritage Centre. An historian will also
be available to answer questions. We then adjourn to the
Rangiriri Hotel for lunch and a refreshing drink if you so
desire. A drive around the surrounding countryside will
complete our day.

Venturing
to the East Coast we make our way to Katikati the Mural town
of
New Zealand
. Our first
visit is to marvel at the 2000 beautifully made dolls at the
Dolls

wander around and view its many murals and arts and crafts.
From here we step back into the past, with
walk-through scenes and exhibits at the

Formosa
Golf Club
Formosa
is listed in the finest Golf Clubs of the World and covers
an area of 440 acres. The course has panoramic views of
Waiheke
Island
and Rangitoto from its cliff top and coastal fairways. The
course was designed by Sir Bob Charles. Today we will be met
and shown around prior to enjoying lunch in the restaurant.
We will complete the day with a drive around some bays
before returning to
Hamilton
.

18th July – Auckland’s
Historic Homesteads
We
head to
Auckland
today where we visit 2 Historic Homesteads. First we will
visit Ewelme Cottage, a step back into the 1880’s and
built of Kauri. This
is a city cottage which all items are original. We will then
have time in
Newmarket
for you to purchase your lunch before visiting Highwic. Highwic
was home to Buckland’s 21 children and remained in the
family until sold in 1978. Furnished with antiques, there is
much to interest and charm visitors of all ages, and in
addition, the lawns and fine gardens provide a haven from
the hustle and bustle of nearby
Newmarket
.
Today will be a very interesting and informative day.

– Classic Air and ‘The Pantry’
Travelling
over the Kaimais to a warmer climate (hopefully) we arrive
in Tauranga to first visit
Classic Air. Classic
Air was formed when a bunch of passionate
individuals got together to achieve this dream to protect
the rich and precious history of
New Zealand
aviation. At the
museum as well as the awe-inspiring display of aircraft,
large showcases of historic memorabilia feature military
aviation weapons, flight suits, helmets, rare aircraft parts
and much more. There is also an excellent collection of
replicas and models (including some vintage models dating
back to the 1960’s) along with a collection of vintage
motorbikes and classic military vehicles and much more! We then enjoy lunch at
Bureta Motor Inn and this afternoon another treat, a visit
to ‘The Pantry’ for the opportunity to try and perhaps
buy delicious chutneys, jams, preserves, spices, chocolates,
toffees, mustards, spreads….. oh my goodness it is a
pantry! It will
be a delicious day out in the
Bay
of
Plenty
!

Dogs
They
are so cute at this age, and they are in training to be a
vital partner to those visually impaired.
Today we travel to the New Zealand Foundation of the
Blind – Guide Dog training academy.
Here we hear about the process involved in bringing
these pups up to fulfill a very important role in society.
Following our visit here we continue into
Lynn
Mall
. A shopping complex we haven’t ventured to for quite some
time but one which Les was impressed with recently. Time
here for your lunch and a look around.

7th August – Orewa
& Wenderholm
Today
we travel over the new expressway to Orewa. We then have
time in Orewa for you to purchase your lunch and perhaps
look at some of the shops before continuing further north to

Wenderholm
Regional
Park
where we stop in to visit Couldrey House. The earliest part
of the house is thought to have been built about 1857, by
Robert Graham, and was originally named Wenderholm, or
‘winter home’.

tour of Glenbrook Steel Mill
A
day in the mill! Another
very hard place to get into for which we have been patiently
waiting! For our
tour today we must follow the following guidelines:
Please wear long trousers/pants that cover all of
your legs – no ¾ pants ladies.
Long sleeved shirts/blouses, and covered and flat
“sensible” shoes. If
you aren’t attired correctly then you will be refused on
the tour. We do
need to emphasise the amount of stairs (quite considerable)
and walking involved. You do need to be reasonably fit as
this is a 3 hour tour. We have a break in the tour to
purchase lunch (at own cost) at
the staff cafeteria before completing the tour. A very
interesting tour.

Today
we visit Origin Coffee in Pirongia – a locally owned and
operated factory headed by Roger
and Liz Sheppard who have been introducing New Zealand
coffee aficionados to a gourmet product from the central
African country of Malawi where Roger ran plantations.
A conducted tour today explains the processes and
answers any questions. After
this we wind our way back to Tirau to enable you to purchase
lunch before visiting Corrugated Iron which is a work
of art. A Corrugated Creation can be made to enhance any
decor.

Melodies The Band of the Royal Regiment of NZ Artillery

again we head north this time to Takapuna to listen to the
Band of the Royal Regiment of NZ Artillery. After the show

Watercare's Rain Forest Express, a narrow-gauge railway

. You will be taken over wooden bridges that span valleys
lined with ancient forest, and pass through tunnels lit at
night with a multitude of glow-worms (and housing the odd
cave weta!). Your adventure culminates in a visit to one of

's hidden treasures, the Upper Nihotupu Dam, where the
silence of the bush belies the closeness of the city. Bring

Organic Farm
Marphona
Farms is one of
New Zealand
’s largest privately owned dairy farms.
With
1200 milking cows on the organic farm, they calve throughout
the year due to the demand of the processing plant.
On our arrival the Operations Manager (Neil) will
meet and greet us before we are taken around the cow shed
and explained how it all works.
Neil will talk about the history of the farm and what
developments have been made and what is to be achieve in the
future. We will
continue through to the processing plant and learn how it
all works from pasteurising to end product, if the weather
is good we can go around the farm and through to the calf
rearing facility.
Back to Te Awamutu for lunch and a wander around.

Howick
Village
– Celebration of Spring
Today
the whole Village is filled with activity, as up to 30
costumed villagers go about their daily tasks. This is a
special day to celebrate the coming of Spring. The
visiting 65th Regiment also has an encampment and performs
military duties including cannon firing (on occasions) and
musket drill. A blacksmith's forge is in operation, and a
bodger works on his pole lathe, turning wood. You can call
into the general store or visit cottages where you can
sample food cooked over the fires, or learn about everyday
crafts and activities. You can experience a Victorian school
lesson, take part in a church service, and enjoy various
forms of entertainment. Bring your lunch or purchase it at
the café.

Mines – Eye View
Today
we have a guided tour of solid Energy’s Rotowaro Opencast
Mine & rehabilitated mining areas. A guide joins our
coach and guides us through the various mining areas. From
here we will continue to Parnassus Farm & Garden which
sits on top of the biggest underground coal mine in N.Z.
Here we will have a traditional miners lunch and will be
given a talk about the history of the farm and have an
opportunity to enjoy the gardens. This will be followed by a
visit to the
Waikato
coalfields museum to see a fascinating display of the
miner’s lives and their families.

arrival to Rotorua we visit Janet Keen's art mosaic

, before visiting another lovely garden belonging to
Jeanette Blackburn. This is a superbly designed city garden
featuring rose arbours, gazebo, fish pond, aviaries,

perennials. Jeanette also has an art gallery and is the
recipient of many awards.
