Friday 23 – Wednesday 28 December 2022 (6 Days)

Join this Christmas tour for a relaxing summer break exploring the East Coast. We stay in Napier for the first part of the tour, with plenty of great opportunities to explore the Hawke’s Bay, and a wonderful dinner at the historic Mission Estate Winery. We travel into the charming Wairarapa region, staying in Martinborough for the remainder of the tour, with a unique dining experience at Tirohana Estate.

Day 1        Friday 23 December 2022
JOURNEY TO NAPIER (D)
We begin our first morning together touring the rich Waikato countryside as we travel to Taupo, where we have the opportunity to purchase some lunch (own cost). After lunch, we depart Taupo and travel across the Rangitaiki Plains to Hawke's Bay, and the seaside city of Napier.  The city of Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt during a period when Art Deco architecture was fashionable. The area is also one of New Zealand’s top grape growing regions with some of the country’s best-known wines coming from the Hawke’s Bay. On arrival, we enjoy an orientation tour of the city before making our way to our hotel. Architecturally designed to complement its remarkable location on the edge of Hawke’s Bay, our contemporary hotel on Marine Parade is just a short stroll from the town centre and the beach.  Tonight, we enjoy a group dinner at our hotel.
Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Te Pania, Napier – 3 nights

Day 2  Saturday 24 December 2022
NAPIER (BD)
Our Christmas Eve commences with a special experience!   What better way to explore that Art Deco Capital of the World than with a city tour in a magnificently restored Art Deco vehicle? We’ll break into smaller groups and meet our experienced chauffeurs who will give us a light-hearted guided tour of Napier where we will learn about its intriguing history and fascinating highlights.  We’ll make a stop for a delightful morning tea of scones, local jam and cream with a pot of tea while enjoying the view of the Ahuriri Harbour watching the sailing boats passing by. Our chauffeurs will explain the incredible difference the 1931 earthquake made to the size of the harbour and the smaller inlet that now forms the home of the fishing and sailing boats. At the conclusion of our vintage car tour and morning tea, we return to our hotel for an afternoon at leisure. For our Christmas Eve dinner, we travel to Mission Estate Winery for a delicious 3 course dinner. The restaurant is located in a historic building overlooking the Art Deco suburbs of Greenmeadows and Marewa with the Norfolk Pines of Marine Parade in Napier seen in the distance with the Pacific ocean on the horizon. The Mission was built in 1880, it was known as La Grande Maison or the "big house", and was home for French Marists for over three decades.

Day 3  Sunday 25 December 2022
CHRISTMAS DAY IN NAPIER (BLD)

Merry Christmas!!!

A leisurely morning awaits us before we enjoy a delicious Christmas Lunch at our hotel. This afternoon, we’ll take a scenic drive around the Hawke’s Bay. We’ll see the small towns of Clive, Haumoana and
Te Awanga before arriving at Clifton to view Cape Kidnappers, the iconic headland sitting at the south-eastern extremity of Hawke's Bay.  From here we’ll visit the beautiful Waimarama Beach. There will be time available for you to stretch your legs or a swim (remember to bring your togs and towel if you wish to swim!). Our explorations will take us through prosperous Havelock North and past the spectacular Craggy Range winery set directly under the dominant gaze of Te Mata Peak. Our Christmas Day afternoon will be completed as we make our way back to Napier travelling through Hastings, Bridge Pa and Fern Hill. We dine together this evening at our hotel.

Day 4  Monday 26 December 2022
NAPIER - MARTINBOROUGH (BLD)
We farewell Napier this morning and travel south through the rolling farmlands of Central Hawkes Bay and the Wairarapa, stopping for time in the quaint township of Greytown where we will enjoy free time to explore the beautifully restored Victorian buildings that house stylish and interesting specialty stores, boutiques, art galleries, and cafés.   We will dine for lunch at one of the local cafés. From here we travel on to the lovely wine village of Martinborough for our two-night stay. Packed with colonial charm, Martinborough features over 20 wineries, most within cycling and walking distance of the quaint village square. Tonight, we’ll have a group dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Accommodation: Parehua Resort, Martinborough – 2 nights

Day 5  Tuesday 27 December 2022
MARTINBOROUGH SIGHTS (BLD)
This morning there will be time for you to explore the Martinborough township. You may wish to visit a local winery for some wine tasting or browse the local shops. This afternoon we reconvene as a group and enjoy a special 3-course set menu lunch at Tirohana Estate, a boutique vineyard. A unique dining experience awaits you in this elegant and evocative restaurant, surrounded by vines in the heart of Martinborough.  With antique Mexican doors, original New Zealand artwork, Italian tiled floor, huge open fire, leather chairs and views directly over the vineyard, Tirohana Estate Restaurant offers clients a memorable experience of award-winning wine, premium cuisine with excellent service. Tonight, we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel.

Day 6 Wednesday 28 December 2022
JOURNEY FROM MARTINBOROUGH (B)
Today we commence our journey home after a fantastic time away exploring the East Coast. We’ll travel home through the Wairarapa countryside before following State Highway 1 across the Central Plateau by making our return trip to Hamilton, and then onward with our homeward bound journeys.
