Friday 15 February – Monday 18 February 2019 (4 Days)
Day 1 – Friday 15th February 2019 HOME CITIES NAPIER (D)
We commence our first morning touring the rich Waikato countryside as we travel to Taupo, where you will have the opportunity to purchase lunch (own cost). After lunch we depart Taupo and travel through the small towns of Rangitaiki and Tarawera to Napier in the Hawkes Bay. Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt during the period when Art Deco Architecture was fashionable. Napier is now known as the Art Deco City. The area is also one of New Zealand’s top grape growing regions with some of the country’s best known wines coming from the Hawke’s Bay. On arrival, we will have an orientation tour of the city before making our way to our hotel for the evening. Tonight we will enjoy a delicious buffet dinner at the Napier RSA. After dinner, you may wish to make your way down to the Soundshell for Festival opening. Take in the first of the Memorial Flying Displays, the Navy Ceremonial Sunset, admire the cars, fashion, and let your imagination soar as they showcase a selection of the entertainment available during the festival.
Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Te Pania, Napier – 3 nights
Day 2 – Saturday 16th February 2019 NAPIER (B)
This morning is at your leisure to enjoy the Art Deco festivities. Around lunchtime today, we enjoy the Classic Car Parade. Led by the Royal New Zealand Navy Band, the parade will feature New Zealand’s oldest cars, the 1895 Benz; 1934 Cadillac V16 Town Cabriolet; 1935 Duesenberg J Phaeton; 1935 Packard S8 3 window Coupe, and so many more remarkable cars. There will be an Art Deco Ball for those who wish to dress up (own cost). Details of this and other activities will be available in the Art Deco Brochure available later in 2018. Included in the programme are dining, wining, dancing and jazz, film, theatre, house tours, vintage cars, plane rides and much more. You can choose from this extensive range but additional activities will be at your own expense.
Day 3 – Sunday 17th February 2019 NAPIER (B)
After a leisurely breakfast this morning, you may wish to head down to view the Soap Box Derby, where children and parents race their home-made carts to the thrills of the thousands who come to watch and cheer them on. There is also the Market Street Fair, where you can experience the taste of the 1930s with authentic Deco sweets and treats available for purchase. This afternoon we enjoy the Gatsby picnic. This year’s picnic is all about celebrating the festivals’ 30th anniversary. There will be cake, presents, and goodies to take home. Set up by the seaside for a relaxed Sunday afternoon in the sunshine. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure.
Day 4 – Monday 18th February 2019 NAPIER – HOME CITIES (B)
There will be time for viewing more activities in the centre city area or perhaps do a little retail therapy before purchasing an early lunch ready for our departure from Napier back to Hamilton via Taupo. For those who were picked up from home, you will be delivered back to your home.
