Today we travel to Auckland for our afternoon flight from Auckland to Sydney. On arrival our local touring coach will meet us, do an introductory city sights tour and then take us to our inner city accommodation – our base for the next three nights. After settling into our rooms we meet in the hotel restaurant for dinner.
Accommodation: The Grace Hotel, Sydney – 3 nights
Day 2 Thursday 17 October 2019 SYDNEY SIGHTSEEING (BLD)
This morning we meet our local walking guide, who will take us on a 90 minute leisurely walk through Sydney’s colonial district, The Rocks. During our time we hear the story of Sydney’s convict past while strolling along the shoreline of Sydney Harbour with views of the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, past Cadman’s Cottage, Sydney’s oldest cottage built in 1816, Campbell’s Cove and the hidden Foundation Park. Wander down hidden alleyways, into shady courtyards, along cobbled laneways listening to the story of Australia’s first British settlement. Be amazed with stories of The First Fleet 1788, Nurses Walk, The Rum Rebellion 1808, the Argyle Cut 1840, Suez Canal, the plague 1900, the Harbour Bridge 1920’s, the diabolical 1970’s plan to demolish The Rocks and the Green Bans that saved it. And of Course the characters and rogues who called it home. Next stop the Justice and Police Museum where we take a ‘Cops and Robbers tour’. It is here we learn about what it took to maintain law and order on Sydney’s waterfront. It is a fine example of a vibrant, modern city and with over 15 million visitors a year she has certainly shrugged off her past reputation. Ending our afternoon in the tranquility of the Royal Botanic Gardens tops off a most interesting day in this iconic city but it is not over yet! Get refreshed and dressed as we are off for dinner tonight on Sydney Harbour. At Kings Street Wharf we board the “MV Sydney 2000” for an evening cruise with luxurious, a la carte dining and first class service. Entertainment, great food, and fabulous views will set the scene for a great evening as well.
Day 3 Friday 18 October 2019 Edinburgh Military Tattoo (BL)
After a bit of a sleep in and breakfast in the hotel we will re-join our local touring coach and take a drive, across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, to Manly where we have arranged a visit to the Quarantine Station at North Head. What was it like to be quarantined? We explore the history of the Quarantine Station, its historical buildings and stunning grounds. Hear the personal stories of passengers quarantined and the dedicated staff who lived and worked on site; see the autoclaves used to sterilise luggage and personal effects; experience the inhalation chambers and hear how they were used – an interesting tour followed by a light lunch. We have some free time in Manly and the chance for a walk along the Corso. We then transfer back to the city for our afternoon appointment at the Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre at Garden Island – just east of the city. It’s a fascinating place that provides a broad exploration of Australia’s great Maritime history. Back at the hotel there will be time to prepare for our night at the Tattoo and purchase some early dinner (own cost) before the transfer to ANZ Stadium and the 2019 Australian performance for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Military tradition at its finest! Set against the backdrop of a full-size Edinburgh Castle replica the unique show is a mix of military tradition and exceptional entertainment to create an experience for the senses. Be captivated by traditional Scottish and international favourites including highland dancers, pipers, precision drill teams and emotional ceremony. We’ll leave feeling honoured and amazed at one of the greatest shows on earth!
