Day 2 Wednesday 18 May 2022
AROUND NEW PLYMOUTH (B)
After breakfast our first stop today is to visit the impressive Tawhiti Museum – an impressive visual history of South Taranaki. Situated in Hawera, Tawhiti Museum is a truly unique enterprise. The creation of artist Nigel Ogle, its attention to detail is simply stunning. Widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country, the museum uses life size exhibits and scale models to present our heritage in a series of super realistic and engaging displays. All these displays are designed and built on the premises in the 'Body Shop' and accompanying studios, which can be viewed as part of a museum visit. After this visit, continue on to Stratford. This town is located in the heart of Taranaki, and is the gateway to Mt Taranaki / Egmont, Egmont National Park, and the Forgotten World Highway. Stratford is nestled at the junction of two major roads (SH3 and SH43), and sits on the banks of the Patea River. It is known for its Shakespearean theme and stunning parks and gardens. It is here we view Stratford's glockenspiel which is unique in New Zealand. The glockenspiel plays a scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet four times daily (at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm) with figures made by the curator of the Tawhiti Museum, Nigel Ogle. The glockenspiel performs for approximately 5-minutes, after the hour chimes are finished. We return to New Plymouth the main city for Taranaki region but before arriving into the city we head north to get a photo of the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River at the northern end of New Plymouth's Coastal Walkway. Its spectacular shape and setting make it a popular landmark. The 83-metre long bridge is reminiscent of a breaking wave or a whale skeleton.
Day 3 Thursday 19 May 2022
NEW PLYMOUTH - PALMERSTON NORTH (B)
Today we travel southbound following the coast to Whanganui before travelling inland to Palmerston North. On arrival we take a tour of the city followed by some free time. Some may wish to visit the New Zealand Rugby Museum (at additional cost). Founded by John Sinclair and modeled after the Trophy Room in Cardiff Arms Park in Wales, the museum's collections include equipment, clothing, books, photographs, trophies, badges and almost everything else related to the game. If rugby isn’t your thing then the New Zealand Rugby Museum is within the Civic Centre and adjacent to the Te Manawa cultural complex - Te Manawa is a museum, art gallery and science centre in Palmerston North, New Zealand. This afternoon we check into our overnight accommodation.

Departing Palmerston North we travel through Central Hawkes Bay via Dannevirke, Waipukurau and Waipawa to Havelock North. At Havelock we visit the home of Arataki Honey – a family staple since 1944! Later this afternoon we arrive in Napier. Napier was devastated by an earthquake and ensuing fires in 1931 and was rebuilt during the period when Art Deco Architecture was fashionable. Within two years, the city was rebuilt, predominantly in Art Deco style, with Maori motifs and design elements incorporated. On arrival we take a tour of Napier City to see some of the fine examples of Art Deco easily seen around the city centre.
