Sunday 09 – Friday 14 January 2022 (6 Days)
The Chatham Islands is New Zealand’s eastern most outpost, with the dateline stretching around the Chathams, allowing the claim to fame of being the first permanently inhabited place in the world to welcome the new day. The isolation of the Chathams has created a unique island lifestyle and society and many locals descend from Moriori genealogy. Discover the rich Moriori history and culture during your stay on the Chatham Islands along with the Maori and European history. The remote location of the Chathams means there is endemic flora and fauna, found nowhere else in the world.
Day 1 Sunday 09 January 2022
JOURNEY TO THE CHATHAM ISLANDS (D)
Our tour commences today with a flight from Auckland to the Chatham Islands via Christchurch, with an estimated arrival time at Chatham Islands at 5.30pm. On arrival we will be transferred from the airport to the Hotel Chathams where we stay for the next 5 nights. On this site since the 1860s, The Hotel Chathams is a big part of life on the Chatham Islands. Located in Waitangi Bay, the views from all around the hotel are spectacular all day long. Tonight we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel.
Accommodation: Hotel Chathams, Chatham Islands – 5 nights
Day 2 Monday 10 January 2022
THE WILD WEST (BLD)
After breakfast this morning we meet our guide for the day and our first stop is the Stone Cottage. A Historic Listed building, the Stone Cottage was built in 1866-1868 by German Moravian missionaries who had a big impact on the lifestyle of the Chathams. We then travel to the Waitangi West Cattle Station for a picnic lunch. After lunch travel to Splatter Rock at the western end of Wharekauri Beach. Estimated to be around five million years old, Splatter Rock is a lava formation which was erupted into soft sediments on the sea floor and formed central tube-like shapes. After visiting Cape Young, we head back to the Waitangi township for some time at leisure before dinner at the hotel.
Day 3 Tuesday 11 January 2022
KAINGAROA FISHING VILLAGE (BLD)
We start this day with a walk at the Nikau Bush Conservation Area, a DOC area that has allowed prolific regeneration and nikau flowering during December and January, the only plant native to the Chathams. After walking through the protected forest area, head to the Manauea Ocean Mail Scenic Reserve for a picnic lunch. This reserve covers 831 ha of peat dome and wetland as well as 4km of coastal sand dunes. This afternoon we head to the Muirson Farm to visit the relatively intact 1945 flying boat which was salvaged to build sheds and huts but has begun to be restored by the current farm owners. After visiting this farm, we visit the Point Munning to see the resident fur seal colony lounging on the schist rock formations. We continue on to the J.M. Baker Hapupu National Historic Reserve where hundreds of years ago the ancestors of the Moriori, those indigenous to the Chatham Islands, carved images into the trunks of the living trees. Tonight dinner is at the hotel.
Day 4 Wednesday 12 January 2022
OWENGA FISHING VILLAGE (BLD)
This morning we head out to the Kopinga Marae, where the names of 1700 ancestors are carved into the central post as a reminder of the sacrifice they made and is a chance to learn more about the history of the islands and Moriori culture. While here we also visit the Tommy Solomon statue who was the last known full-blooded Moriori to live and died in 1933. From here we head to the Basalt Columns located on private land at Ohira Bay. These unique geological formations were created from lava flows by the Southern Volcanics that erupted around 80 million years ago which created columns when the lava cooled. Before lunch we go to the picturesque bay of Port Hutt which is in the Whangaroa Harbour. This was the landing place for the Maori in 1835 and is now the resting place of some interesting relics in the shallow waters. We enjoy a picnic lunch here before continuing our tour. The afternoon will be spent at the Admiral Gardens where you can walk around and enjoy the garden built for birds, bees and butterflies. Tonight we enjoy a buffet dinner at the Admiral Gardens.
Day 5 Thursday 13 January 2022
SOUTH COAST - PITT ISLAND (BLD)
Today we begin with some birdwatching on the South Coast before heading to the River Onion Gallery for lunch. Right on the shoreline this refurbished 1970s home takes you back in time and showcases the work of local artist, Celine Gregory Hunt, whose work represents a spiritual connection with landscapes, seascapes, bird and fish life of her home on Pitt Island. This afternoon we head to Te Matarae for a scenic drive down the coast.
