Day 1 Thursday 14 April 2022
JOURNEY TO NEW PLYMOUTH (D)
We travel through Waikato farmlands and rural towns before stopping at Waitomo to head underground into the spectacular Ruakuri Cave. The spiral entranceway is a remarkable feat of modern engineering and leads us gently deeper into the ground with our local guide. Walk through the cave marvelling at the softly folding shawl-like limestone formations and crystal tapestries, hear the distant thunder of the subterranean waterfalls and get up close to glow-worms. From Waitomo we travel through the limestone country of the King Country and Awakino Gorge before reaching the Tasman Coast and then New Plymouth, our base for the next four nights. Often described as the jewel in New Plymouth’s crown, Pukekura Park is situated in the heart of the city. We stop here for a walk through the gardens which feature the iconic red Poet’s Bridge, Fountain Lake, the Waterfall and Band Rotunda. We dine this evening at a local restaurant.
Accommodation: The Devon Hotel, New Plymouth – 4 nights
Day 2 Friday 15 April 2022
NEW PLYMOUTH (BD)
This morning we take an orientation tour around the city seeing points of interest before we visit a building wrapped in stainless steel – surely one of New Zealand’s most intriguing exteriors! We visit the world-renowned Govett-Brewster Art Gallery / Len Lye Centre – New Zealand’s first and only museum of contemporary art. It is also our first institution dedicated to a single artist, the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye. The design and engineering of the centre is striking with a curved exterior wall of mirrorlike stainless steel. After time to purchase your lunch (own cost), in the afternoon we’ll drive out to one of New Plymouth’s most striking landmarks. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is reminiscent of a breaking wave or a whale skeleton and on a clear day, the arches of the bridge frame Mount Taranaki spectacularly in the distance. For those who would like to stretch their legs this afternoon, take a walk back to our hotel along part of the Coastal Walkway which is a 3.5-km walk (approximately 45-minutes). This expansive sea-edge promenade boasts dramatic views at each turn. After our day of explorations around the city, we’ll dine at our hotel.
Day 3 Saturday 16 April 2022
TARANAKI SCENIC DRIVE (BD)
We head out of town today to visit some of Taranaki’s smaller communities. One of Taranaki’s most celebrated gardens, Tūpare is a premier landscaped garden with a unique homestead, originally developed by Sir Russell Matthews and his family from 1932. Here we take a guided tour of Tūpare’s distinctive Chapman-Taylor designed house which is an excellent example of the Arts & Crafts style of architecture and provides a glimpse of a family lifestyle through the mid-20th century.Closest main centre to Egmont National Park, Stratford is the gateway to Mount Taranaki, Dawson Falls, and the Forgotten World Highway. It is a vibrant farming community, with a focus on dairy farming. We’ll see the Stratford Glockenspiel which plays a delightfully romantic scene from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’. Interestingly all streets in Stratford are named after Shakespearean plays and characters! We visit the Taranaki Pioneer Village for a nostalgic stroll through yesteryear as we stroll through their outdoor museum which presents the life of Taranaki pioneers in the 19th and 20th centuries. The village features 40 authentic historic structures dating back to 1853 and many exhibits and museum artifacts are in working condition. We make a stop at Eltham which is home to a number of Victorian buildings. While some are in varying states of repair, they are significant for their architecture and their importance to Eltham’s social and economic history and reflect the importance that this town had in the dairy industry late in the 19th century. Late afternoon we return to New Plymouth and dine at a local restaurant this evening.
Day 4 Sunday 17 April 2022
NEW PLYMOUTH (BD)
After a leisurely start we visit Puke Ariki, New Plymouth’s ground-breaking cultural centre. Five gallery spaces celebrate the uniqueness of Taranaki from 30-million years ago to today. The ‘Taranaki Life’ gallery offers an interactive journey to experience life in Taranaki. From the first European settlers to more recent migrants, the gallery tells the stories of those who have made Taranaki home. From here we drive a short portion of ‘Surf Highway 45’. The surf coast that gives the highway its name leads to dozens of surf breaks including the ‘Kumera Patch’, ‘Stent Road’ and ‘Rocky Rights’. We’ll stop at the small coastal town of Oakura with its eclectic mix of stress-free baches, million-dollar beach houses and a wide black-sand beach before returning to New Plymouth. Dinner at our hotel this evening.
