This short break is filled with nature and discovery. We explore New Zealand’s Forgotten World lost in deep hidden valleys. We take a thrilling boat ride on the majestic Whanganui River, and travel along decommissioned railway lines in powered self-drive carts, adventuring at a relaxed pace through tunnels, over bridges and rivers and to townships that time forgot.
Day 1 Thursday 20 April 2023
JOURNEY TO TAUMARUNUI (D)
This morning we depart Hamilton and travel south to Taumarunui with a stop at Otorohanga. We visit the world-famous Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park, surrounded by beautiful nature, the park contains New Zealand's largest public collection of kiwi and other indigenous species. Here we have a chance to get up close and personal to a wonderful range of the native birds as well as three types of Kiwis (Northern Brown Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi and Little Spotted Kiwi), Morepork, Kaka and much more! Enjoy lunch (own expense) before we continue on to Waitomo where we travel towards Marakopa and to the Mangapohue Natural Bridge. Wander down the boardwalk as it weaves its way through the impressive limestone gorge bringing you underneath the stunning natural bridge. We continue our travels to Te Kuiti which was originally a railway town. The town now promotes itself as the "Shearing Capital of the World" and hosts the New Zealand Shearing Championships. A huge statue of a shearer with a sheep dominates the landscape at the southern end of the town. We reach Taumarunui located in the Ruapehu region after travelling through amazing scenic routes. Taumarunui is known for its railway history, farming, gardens and weaving. Dinner tonight at the motel.

Day 2 Friday 21 April 2023
RAIL AND RIVER BOAT TOUR (BLD)
Nestled deep in hidden valleys, the Forgotten World Highway is the ultimate way to explore rural New Zealand. Today we explore the northern section of Forgotten World from the comfort of a rail-cart; adapted to be self-driven along decommissioned railway tracks. During the course of the day, we learn about the history of the area, experience ten tunnels on the line, take a thrilling boat ride on the majestic Whanganui River and enjoy an appetising Ploughman’s Lunch at the Old Tokirima Station. There are also plenty of photo opportunities along the way to capture and take-in the ever-changing vistas. Tonight, we dine together in the motel restaurant.
Note: A reasonable level of mobility/agility is required to climb in/out of the jetboat.
Day 3 Saturday 22 April 2023
JOURNEY FROM TAUMARUNUI (B)
Leaving behind the unforgettable experiences in Taumarunui, we travel south to Tongariro National Park to view the stunning exterior of the Chateau Tongariro and visit the Whakapapa Information Centre where you can purchase souvenirs of our trip. Travelling through Turangi and around the western side of Lake Taupo to reach Whakamaru, where we will have our lunch stop (own cost). We explore the back roads of the Waikato before completing our journey back to Hamilton; and then onwards to your home destination.

Are door to door collections included on this tour? YES
Yes. Leisure Time Tours offers a free home collection and drop off service from selected Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua and most Auckland City areas. Our complimentary collections are based on your individual post code, other home collection locations available at an additional cost. Alternatively you may wish to meet us at our Hamilton depot in which case you can park your car in our secure yard free of charge for the duration of your holiday. For all tours that have a flight component, we can also offer door to door collections from Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin city areas.
Is the Guaranteed twin Share Price available on this tour? YES
Yes. Our Guaranteed Twin Share price is available for those passengers willing to share with another single traveller of the same gender. If there isn’t another passenger of the same gender to share with we GUARANTEE our twin share price. Leisure Times Tours accepts no responsibility for the compatibility of passengers travelling under this arrangement. If someone is not compatible with the person they have been matched up with, all additional costs incurred to assist with changing their shared room type to two single rooms will be at the expense of both travellers and will be subject to availability. Acceptance of a guaranteed twin share room is subject to the individual’s medical condition being suitable for this type of arrangement.

Will there be a daily seat rotation on this tour? YES
Passengers rotate seats in the coach daily so that all passengers have the opportunity to enjoy forward and window seating. All passengers are expected to participate as a booking condition.

Yes we can. Should you wish to arrive earlier or stay longer we can book in some pre and post tour accommodation for you. Please ask at the time of booking if you require this.

Are roadside morning teas included on our tours? YES
Yes. A point of difference is that wherever possible we offer our passengers roadside refreshments served from the coach. This gives all passengers the chance to mix and mingle over a hot cuppa allowing us to share our experiences as we journey together.
Do I need travel insurance?

How much luggage can I bring?
Luggage is restricted to one suitcase and one small item of hand luggage per person. Baggage handling of one suitcase per person, at each hotel, is included in the trip price. Carry-on/hand luggage handling is the responsibility of each guest and all personal items must be taken off the coach by you each day of the trip.
What clothing should I pack?
When on tour, dress is generally relaxed and casual with an informal dress standard on most occasions. Casual wear is recommended for travelling with something a little more formal for evening dining. If taking part in outdoor activities, make sure you have a waterproof coat, comfortable footwear and dress in layers to help you adjust to any sudden changes in climate. Be prepared for New Zealand’s powerful sun, even on cold windy days, bringing a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
