Day 1 Thursday 02 March 2023
JOURNEY TO AUCKLAND (D)
Arriving in Auckland City, what better way to start our explorations of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf than with a flight giving us a special perspective from the air. Our 45-minute scenic flight will showcase some of New Zealand’s top island paradises while we learn more about the history of the Auckland region and soak in the magical views of Rangitoto, Motutapu and Waiheke Island. This evening we dine at a local waterfront restaurant just a short stroll from our hotel.
Accommodation: MSocial Hotel, Auckland – 5 nights
Day 2 Friday 03 March 2023
WAIHEKE ISLAND DAY TRIP (BL)
Today we discover Waiheke Island. With pristine beaches, world class wines, and fantastic cuisine, it’s easy to see why Waiheke Island is considered the jewel in the Hauraki Gulf’s crown. Taking a ferry to the Island we are met by our local guide at Matiatia Wharf to commence a privately guided tour of Waiheke Island. On the way, stunning scenery is around every corner, and we’ll be entertained by our guide’s commentary on the history, geography, culture, people and produce of Waiheke. First, we travel to the Eastern End to the recently reopened Stony Batter Tunnels. Enjoy a 60-minute guided walk through the 1.2 km network of tunnels with stories about their purpose and construction. Stony Batter features gun sites and other impressive remains that date back to World War II. After our exploring, we enjoy a wine tasting and a 2-course lunch before returning to Auckland City by ferry in the late afternoon. Take the opportunity to experience local dining tonight for dinner.
Day 3 Saturday 04 March 2023
RANGITOTO ISLAND DAY TRIP (BLD)
This morning we board the ferry and travel across the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto Island, an extinct volcano. Rangitoto Island is the youngest of 60 volcanoes that dynamically formed the Auckland isthmus some 50,000 years ago. Formed from volcanic lava, it also features intriguing tunnels and is covered with a blanket of indigenous vegetation, including manuka and pohutukawa. The 7km walk on well-formed paths through lava fields and the largest pōhutukawa forest in the world, is well worth it for the panoramic view from the summit. We enjoy a picnic lunch on this ancient volcano before returning to Auckland City in the early afternoon. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure before we enjoy dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 Sunday 05 March 2023
TIRITIRI MATANGI DAY TRIP (BLD)
Back aboard the ferry this morning, we travel to Tiritiri Matangi for a guided day excursion. From the moment you step onto the island to the moment you leave; you will be entranced by the serenade of gentle birdsong and the lush native bush. It has been revegetated with around 300,000 native trees and a number of New Zealand’s endangered birds and reptile species have been re-introduced gradually. A specialist guide will introduce us to the island with a 90-minute guided walk with ample opportunity to spot these little creatures. After the guided walk there will be plenty of leisure time to further explore the island and to enjoy a picnic lunch. We return to Auckland City after our adventures and dine at a local restaurant for dinner.
Day 5 Monday 06 March 2023
KAWAU ISLAND DAY TRIP (BLD)
Leaving Auckland City this morning, we make our way to Sandspit to join the Royal Mail Run Cruise. This is the largest mail run by water in the Southern Hemisphere and is a delightfully relaxing way to learn about the history and admire the natural beauty of Kawau Island. Cruise the beautiful bays, gaining a rare glimpse into life on an island that has no roads, taking in the uninterrupted 180-degree views of this scenic wonderland and historic landmarks. While we cruise along, the experienced and informative skipper guides us around over 75 different wharves delivering freight and mail to the island residents and also serves a traditional kiwi BBQ lunch aboard the boat. Afterwards, we will have time in Matakana before returning back to Auckland. Dinner tonight at the hotel restaurant.
Day 6 Tuesday 07 March 2023
