JOURNEY TO AUCKLAND (D)
Departing Hamilton today we arrive in Auckland City and what better way to start our explorations of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf than with a flight giving us a special perspective of the Gulf from the air. Our 45-minute scenic flight will showcase some of New Zealand’s top island paradises and we’ll learn more about the history of the Auckland region while soaking in the magical views of Rangitoto, Motutapu and Waiheke Island. This evening we dine at a local waterfront restaurant just a short stroll from our hotel.

Day 2 Friday 26 November 2021
WAIHEKE ISLAND DAY TRIP (BL)
Today we discover Waiheke Island. With pristine beaches, world class wines, and fantastic cuisine, it’s easy to see why Waiheke Island is considered the jewel in the Hauraki Gulf’s crown. After taking a ferry to the Island we will be met by our local guide at Matiatia Wharf to commence a privately guided tour of Waiheke Island. On the way, stunning scenery is around every corner, and we’ll be entertained by our guide’s commentary on the history, geography, culture, people and produce of Waiheke. First, we travel to the Eastern End to the recently reopened Stony Batter Tunnels. Enjoy a 60-minute guided walk through the 1.2 km network of tunnels with stories about their purpose and construction. Stony Batter features gun sites and other impressive remains that date back to World War II. Local resident, Tim Moon, has reopened the Fort Stony Batter tunnels, following a six-year closure. Afterwards we will enjoy a wine tasting and a 2-course lunch before returning to Auckland City by ferry in the late afternoon. Dinner at leisure tonight.
Day 3 Saturday 27 November 2021
RANGITOTO ISLAND DAY TRIP (BLD)
This morning we board the ferry and travel across the Waitemata Harbour to Rangitoto Island which is an extinct volcano. Rangitoto Island is the youngest of 60 volcanoes that dynamically formed the Auckland isthmus some 50,000 years ago. From the summit, 260 meters above sea level, the island is covered with a blanket of indigenous vegetation, including manuka and pohutukawa. Formed from volcanic lava, it also features intriguing tunnels. It is an 7km walk to the top of the summit and travels over scoria. We will enjoy a picnic lunch before returning to Auckland City in the early afternoon. Dinner in the hotel restaurant tonight.
Day 4 Sunday 28 November 2021
TIRITIRI MATANGI DAY TRIP (BLD)
Today we will be taking the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi for a guided day excursion. From the moment you step onto the island to the moment you leave, you will be entranced by the serenade of gentle birdsong and the lush native bush. It has been revegetated with around 300,000 native trees and 12 of New Zealand’s endangered birds and three reptile species have been re-introduced consequently. A specialist guide will introduce us to the island on arrival with a 90-minute guided walk. After the guided walk there will be plenty of leisure time for you to further explore the island. A picnic lunch will be included today. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this trip. Afterwards we will return to Auckland City. We dine this evening at a local restaurant.
Day 5 Monday 29 November 2021
KAWAU ISLAND DAY TRIP (BLD)
This morning we depart Auckland City and make our way to Sandspit. Here we will join the Royal Mail Run Cruise. This is the largest mail run by water in the Southern Hemisphere, and is a delightfully relaxing way for people of all ages to learn about the history and admire the natural beauty of Kawau Island. Cruise the beautiful bays, gaining a rare glimpse into life on an island that has no roads. From the comfort of our large and luxurious ferry you will have uninterrupted 180-degree views of this scenic wonderland and historic landmarks, while your experienced and informative skipper guides you around over 75 different wharves delivering freight and mail to the island residents. A traditional kiwi BBQ lunch is served aboard the boat. Afterwards we will have time in Matakana before returning back to Auckland. Dinner at a local restaurant tonight.
Day 6 Tuesday 30 November 2021
JOURNEY TO AUCKLAND (B)
This morning we will proceed on a sightseeing tour of central Auckland City. Bastion Point and the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial provide panoramic views of the city and the Gulf including the distinctive symmetrical cone of Rangitoto, one of Auckland’s most iconic landmarks. Other highlights include vibrant Mission Bay plus some time in the trendy shopping area of Parnell Village. Afterwards we will depart Auckland for Hamilton (today will be a back up day if our scenic flight cannot go ahead on the first day).
