ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH                                                                                           (D)

Day 2              Friday 12 April 2024

CHRISTCHURCH – KAIKŌURA                                                                                 (BD)

After breakfast at our accommodation we are transferred to the Christchurch Train Station to board the Coastal Pacific train to Kaikōura. With the Pacific Ocean seemingly lapping at its wheels and the Kaikōura Ranges rising majestically above, the Coastal Pacific is undoubtedly one of the world’s most picturesque train journeys.  From craggy coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops to modern vineyards and rustic farmsteads, the Coastal Pacific cruises through the full spectrum of New Zealand culture and character. Throw in a healthy dose of seals, seagulls, dolphins and the occasional whale, and the Coastal Pacific train easily ranks as one of best days out in New Zealand!  We disembark the train on arrival in Kaikōura – an area well known for its abundant wildlife and its sperm whale population.  Our tour continues northbound now by coach to Ohau Point Lookout to view the large seal colony, we then retrace our steps back to Kaikōura for lunch (own cost)– now when in Rome…. you have to try the local Kai (food) being the local Kōura (crayfish) the famous local delicacy that the town was named after – for those keen to give it a try we will stop off at Nin’s Bin on the way back – that famous blue and white caravan on State Highway 1!  After lunch, we will travel out to Point Kean where close by, the rock platforms are another home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals.  The rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.  Maybe take the coastal walk back into town from Point Kean, visit the Kaikōura Museum or some local shops. Dinner at a local restaurant this evening.

Accommodation: Sudima Hotel, Kaikōura – 2 nights

Day 3              Saturday 13 April 2024

KAIKŌURA WHALE WATCHING                                                                              (B)

This morning after breakfast, we head down to the Whale Way Station (not a spelling mistake) to join Whale Watch Kaikōura to visit an exciting up-close encounter with the world’s largest toothed predator, the Giant Sperm Whale, in their natural environment. These deep-diving whales call Kaikōura’s waters home and are seen on whale-watching tours all year round. Whilst out at the whale grounds, you may also have the chance to view other species of whales migrating through the area, such as Humpbacks, Orca and Blues, as well as dolphins, NZ Fur Seals and up to 75% of the world population of oceanic seabirds. Whilst on your tour, the guides give an informative narration on Kaikōura’s marine life, local whaling history and other interesting stories unique to the Kaikōura area.  At the end of our whale-watching experience we head back to our accommodation and the rest of the day and evening is at your leisure.

Day 4              Sunday 14 April 2024

We arrive in the Waipara Valley area in time for a wine tasting at a local winery before meandering back into Christchurch, our base for the next two nights.  Dinner this evening at our hotel.

Accommodation: Quality Hotel Elms, Christchurch – 2 nights

Day 5              Monday 15 April 2024

CHRISTCHURCH                                                                                                         (BD)

The collection also includes objects from former enemy forces.  From the Air Force Museum, we change the pace enjoying a relaxing punt along the Avon River followed by some free time in the city centre. There will be time available to purchase lunch (own cost) before the punting excursion. We will head back to our hotel to have time to freshen up before going back into town for our farewell dinner on board the Christchurch Tram.
