Friday 23 – Monday 26 September 2022 (4 Days)

Kapiti is one of New Zealand’s most valuable nature reserves and it is the only large island sanctuary for birds between the Hauraki Gulf in the north and New Zealand’s southern outlying islands.  On our Kapiti Island Tour we enjoy a cruise from Paraparaumu to Kapiti Island and a guided history and nature walk. We also visit Southwards Car Museum and Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary.

Day 1          Friday 23 September 2022
JOURNEY TO PARAPARAUMU          (D)
Travel via Taupo and through the Desert Road, which is a unique alpine semi-desert, with the forbidding appearance of a wild desolate wasteland. To the east it merges with the densely forested foothills of the Kaimanawa Ranges. To the west there is no horizon, as the landscape and sky are overwhelmed by the monumental outline of Mt. Ruapehu.  Continuing through the Desert Road our journey takes us onto Paraparaumu, an attractive place located on a reliable river, perfectly sheltered from the stormy west by a geological event that created Kapiti Island, and resting against the mountain range.  This evening we arrive at Paraparaumu and settle into our accommodation for the next two nights. Tonight, get to know your other travellers at a group dinner at a local restaurant in Paraparaumu.
Accommodation: Wrights by The Sea, Paraparaumu – 2 nights

Day 2          Saturday 24 September 2022
KAPITI ISLAND DAY EXCURSION          (BL)
Cruise across from Paraparaumu Beach to Kapiti Island where after an introductory talk on the island’s unique inhabitants, flora and fauna, we take a guided nature and history walk on one of the various nature tracks.  Kapiti Island is home to an internationally famed nature reserve protecting some of the world's rarest and most endangered birds. The island is one of New Zealand's most valuable nature reserves being the only large island sanctuary for birds between the Hauraki Gulf in the north and the most southern outlying islands.  Along the flats you may find the cheeky Takahe, a flightless colourful green and blue bird with an impressive red beak and short stout legs.  This unique bird is the largest living member of the rail family and was once thought to be extinct.  After an enjoyable day on Kapiti Island, we cruise back to Paraparaumu. Dinner tonight is at your leisure.

Day 3           Sunday 25 September 2022
PARAPARAUMU – WELLINGTON – PALMERSTON NORTH          (BD)
This morning we travel down to our capital city to visit Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary.  Zealandia is a must-see eco-attraction and ground-breaking restoration project: a nature lover's paradise and a sanctuary by the city! On this guided tour, we look for some of New Zealand's rarest birds, reptiles and insects living wild in their natural environment, including hihi, tuatara, saddleback, kākā and (at night) little spotted kiwi. Have some free time to purchase some lunch (own cost) before we retrace our steps back up towards Paraparaumu, and on to the Southwards Car Museum whose collection of automobiles is one of the finest in the Southern Hemisphere with cars ranging from the old to the new; from a 1915 Model T Ford to a 1981 De Lorean sports car. The display constantly changes as newly restored cars are exhibited from the some 70 vehicles which are awaiting their turn for restoration.  The collection of motorcycles is as diverse as that of its car collection, with more than 80 motorcycles on active display with the finest range and variety you will see anywhere. Following the museum, we make our way to our accommodation in Palmerston North for the evening.
Accommodation: Distinction Hotel, Palmerston North – 1 night
