Thursday 03 – Monday 07 November 2022 (5 Days)

Perfect for garden enthusiasts, we explore the top of South Island to discover a treasure trove of beautiful gardens of national and regional significance – both public and private. A special highlight is attending New Zealand’s premier garden event; Rapaura Springs Bloom – the Garden Marlborough Festival, as well as visits to a couple of gardens in the Hurunui District.

Day 1             Thursday 03 November 2022
ARRIVE PICTON          (D)
We begin our tour today with a flight from Auckland to Blenheim. On arrival in Blenheim, we will be met by our Leisure Time driver and coach, before travelling to Picton. Located at the head of picturesque Queen Charlotte Sound this pretty, small seaside town will be our base for the next two nights. Tonight, we enjoy a group dinner at the hotel.
Accommodation: Picton Yacht Club Hotel, Picton – 2 nights

Day 2              Friday 04 November 2022
PICTON – BLENHEIM – PICTON          (BL)
Today we enjoy the Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough event. This stunning day features a selection of large gardens, diverse in climate but all framed by spectacular scenery, from the rolling Pacific to the rugged Kaikoura Ranges. We have a friendly and helpful volunteer guide that will host us throughout the day, passing on their knowledge of the region and giving background information and history on the province as we travel between the glorious gardens. A light lunch will be included today. We also get to meet the garden owners who share their wonderful gardens with us.  At the end of the day, we retrace our steps back to Picton. Dinner tonight is at your leisure.

Day 3              Saturday 05 November 2022
PICTON – BLENHEIM – KAIKOURA          (BD)
Returning to Blenheim we enjoy another garden tour that is part of the Rapaura Springs Garden Marlborough event. This half-day tour around the hinterland of Blenheim features three very different gardens that make the most of their locations, including one fed by fresh subterranean spring water. At the end of this tour, there will be time for you to purchase lunch in Blenheim (own cost) before we drive along a thin ledge of land pinned between the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged ranges to Kaikoura, where the mountains meet the sea. On arrival in Kaikoura, we check in to our overnight accommodation and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Accommodation:  The White Morph, Kaikoura

Day 4              Sunday 06 November 2022
KAIKOURA - CHRISTCHURCH          (BD)
Travelling south today we turn inland for our first garden of the day; Waihui. The garden at Waihui has grown and extended over the last 30-years, as the owners learnt what would survive the wind, snow, extreme heat and hydroponic-type conditions. Although renowned for their roses, they also enjoy mixing exotics with natives to achieve a wonderful combination of colour and form from early spring right through to summer and autumn. We next travel to nearby Loch Leven, a Garden of National Significance, awarded 5 stars by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. Started 31-years ago, this 3-acre garden is ever evolving with large borders filled with a rich array of plants including roses, irises, perennials and peonies as well as an array of trees planted throughout the large expanse of lawns and gardens to give shade and tranquillity.  Departing Loch Leven, we continue our journey to the garden city, Christchurch. Time will be available here for you to take a stroll through the Botanic Gardens or simply relax at our accommodation overlooking Hagley Park. Tonight we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at our hotel.
Accommodation:  Chateau on the Park, Christchurch

Day 5              Monday 07 November 2022
DEPART CHRISTCHURCH          (B)
Today we transfer from the hotel to Christchurch Airport for our flight to Auckland, full of memories and inspiration for our own gardens.
