LAKE TEKAPO MIDWINTER CHRISTMAS! (BL)
After a leisurely breakfast this morning we take a walk along the quaint lakeside town of Lake Tekapo, then visit a local homestead for a wonderful traditional early afternoon Christmas lunch with all the trimmings hosted by a local family. What a wonderful way to spend the day! Our host is also a local volunteer at the Church of the Good Shepherd so we are fortunate to have a closed-door tour today of this iconic landmark with our host. Mid-afternoon we’ll head back to our accommodation for a rest or nap after our hearty lunch! This evening please avail yourself to the hotel bar for an early evening meal (own cost) before our special evening experience – The Dark Sky Experience! After wrapping up warm, we travel to the University of Canterbury Observatory at Mount John to enjoy the wonders of the southern night sky and experience the thrill of peering through powerful telescopes. Weather permitting, you will be able to view distant objects such as planets, star clusters, nebulae and distant galaxies. If weather conditions prevent stargazing outside, we’ll learn about the southern skies at a purpose-built technological and interactive venue.

LAKE TEKAPO – MOUNT COOK (BD)
From the shores of Lake Tekapo we travel along the shores of glacial Lake Pukaki and into Mount Cook Village in the Mount Cook National Park. The Mount Cook National Park comprises 70,013-hectares of ice, snow, rock, sub-alpine scrub, tussock and riverbeds. Experience the wonder of the National Park, which features 15 peaks and 5 major glaciers. Mount Cook is also known by the Maori name, Aoraki. This afternoon there is time to enjoy a scenic flight over Mount Cook National Park (additional cost/weather permitting), or perhaps a nature walk – there are many walking options available from our hotel, or just relax taking in the majestic scenery from this iconic hotel.

Day 4 Sunday 31 July 2022
MOUNT COOK – CHRISTCHURCH (BLD)
Following breakfast this morning we retrace our journey back along the shores of Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo before travelling the vast Mackenzie Basin, over Burkes Pass, through Fairlie and Geraldine and onto Longbeach near Ashburton to visit Akaunui Historic House for lunch at the Akaunui Homestead, including an in-depth overview of the history by the current owners. The Akaunui garden was originally designed by Alfred Buxton, established over 100-years ago. Under the stewardship of current owners Ian & Diana Mackenzie, extensive developments have taken place. The garden now covers 6-hectares and includes magnificent old trees (both native and exotic) and a wide variety of recently planted species. There is a pond, a creek and a bog garden, a woodland garden with a large collection of rhododendrons and associated plants; formal and less formal gardens, many roses and a productive vegetable garden. The garden complements the imposing century-old double-storey brick homestead. The garden has been developed for year-round interest so no matter which season you visit, there will be plenty to learn about and admire at Akaunui. From Akaunui we travel into Christchurch to our accommodation for the next two nights. We dine at our hotel this evening.
