Tuesday 21 – Saturday 25 February 2023 (5 Days)
Deep in the Marlborough District we discover Molesworth Station; New Zealand’s largest farm with 440,000 acres and comprised of three stations; Molesworth, Tarndale and St Helens. We visit two out of the three to take in the stunning beauty of summer wildflowers, river valleys and towering mountains. We visit 100-year-old homesteads to learn the history of the farms, explore subalpine areas, and enjoy time in Hanmer Springs. This is truly an unbelievable tour.
Day 1 Tuesday 21 February 2023
ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH – HANMER SPRINGS (LD)
Our tour begins today with our flight from Auckland to Christchurch. On arrival in Christchurch we are greeted by our local guide. On our way to Hanmer springs, we stop to enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, we stop in at Iron Ridge Quarry Sculpture Park, nestled against the dramatic landscape of the Waipara Valley wine region. The Quarry has been transformed into a magical wonderland, with graceful, strong sculptures set against a carefully curated native garden, all under the shadow of breathtaking limestone hills. We arrive in Hanmer Springs, which is our base for the next three nights. Tonight, we meet in the hotel restaurant for a group dinner.

Day 2 Wednesday 22 February 2023
MOLESWORTH STATION (BLD)
Today we embark on a 4WD coach for a visit to one of New Zealand’s most iconic and famous high country stations, Molesworth Station. Departing Hanmer Springs, we travel into the Clarence Valley and pass through the locked gate to access the Acheron Valley. Visit the 150-year old Acheron Cob Homestead for a cuppa and then follow the Acheron River north, passing grazing cattle and the numerous bird life making the most of the daylight hours in this amazing and unequalled landscape of mixed flora and fauna. We continue into the Awatere Valley and onto the famous Molesworth Homestead area nestled under the Kaikoura mountain range which it makes the ideal stop for a picnic lunch and refreshments at the Old Molesworth Cottage. After lunch we head into the Saxton, Muller and Tarndale country with its ever-changing vista of colour and climate before descending down the historic and rugged Jollies Pass Road back to Hanmer Springs. Dinner tonight is at our hotel.
Day 3 Thursday 23 February 2023
RAINBOW STATION (BL)
Today we explore the southern and western sides of Molesworth Station through to Rainbow Station. We start with a climb up through Jacks Pass to Lake Tennyson, nestled under the spectacular Spenser Mountains. Lake Tennyson is the “jewel in the crown” amongst the lofty peaks of the Spenser Mountain range and has a combination of water, forest, high mountains, tussock and scree creating a scenic highlight. From Lake Tennyson, we make our way over Island Pass, the highest road in New Zealand at 1347-metres to enter the rugged old Tarndale area of Molesworth. Passing through a natural divide in the Southern Alps called ‘Hells Gates’, we enter the Wairau & Rainbow Valleys with their craggy, beech tree covered mountains that sweep down to the boulder strewn fast flowing Wairau River dissecting the St Arnaud and Raglan Mountain Ranges. A picnic lunch is included today. On arrival back in Hanmer Springs, dinner is at your leisure.
Day 4 Friday 24 February 2023
HANMER SPRINGS – CHRISTCHURCH (BD)
Our day begins with a scenic drive from Hanmer Springs to the settlement of Waiau where we stop for morning tea and enjoy some free time to explore the local museum and historic buildings including an old church and cobb cottage. Continuing our journey, we make our way through to Woodchester Station. The station gained fame after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes as major fault lines ran through their property causing a huge slip to come down creating a lake which is still there today. The station owners share with us their experience of living and working in this part of New Zealand and about the effects of the earthquakes. We get to see the major slip as well as the new lake (Lake Rebekah). After looking around the property we enjoy a picnic lunch in the gardens before making our way onto our next stop, Cheviot. We stop in the Cheviot Reserve which was once the grounds and gardens for one of the big great farming estates, Cheviot Hills and look around the foundations which are all that are left of the homestead that was built in the 1860s. From here we drive down through Gore Bay, Port Robinson and onwards to Christchurch. Tonight, we enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel.
