Wednesday 16 – Sunday 20 March 2022 (5 Days)

Deep in the Marlborough District we discover Molesworth Station; New Zealand’s largest farm with 440,000 acres and comprised of three stations; Molesworth, Tarndale and St Helens. We visit two out of the three to take in the stunning beauty of summer wildflowers, river valleys and towering mountains. We visit 100-year-old homesteads to learn the history of the farms, explore subalpine areas, and enjoy time in Hanmer Springs . This is truly an unbelievable tour.

Day 1             Wednesday 16 March 2022
ARRIVE BLENHEIM         (D)
We begin our tour with a flight from Auckland to Blenheim. After landing, we take a tour of the city before we arrive at our accommodation for the night. We enjoy a group dinner tonight at the hotel to get to know our fellow travellers before our adventure begins.
Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Marlborough, Blenheim - 1 night

Day 2                  Thursday 17 March 2022
BLENHEIM – HANMER SPRINGS          (BLD)
This morning we head off on a 4WD Molesworth Coach to start our journey over Taylors Pass to Awatere Valley. Our driver will provide a detailed history of this area and the pass that was used as a main transport road between Wairau and Awatere Valleys up until the 1930s, when State Highway One was built. Morning tea will be enjoyed at the Awatere Valley Station before we continue through the valley to Molesworth Station. Up in this high-country station, we stop at the historic Molesworth Cob Cottage for a picnic lunch and refreshments.

Journeying through New Zealand’s largest farm, we watch cattle and horses grazing and find native flowers and fauna that are unique to this country farmland. We follow the river through Acheron valley with its fault lines and unusual rock formations before reaching Acheron House. We have time to discover the history and tales of the last 150+ years that this households in its walls. Travelling through to our final valley of the day, Clarence Valley, we descend into Jollies Pass to the alpine village of Hanmer springs.

Today we have dinner at our hotel.
Accommodation: Hanmer Springs Retreat, Hanmer Springs – 2 nights

Day 3                  Friday 18 March 2022
HANMER SPRINGS – MOLESWORTH STATION – HANMER SPRINGS          (BL)
After breakfast this morning, we climb up through Jacks Pass to Lake Tennyson, this glacial high-country lake is often referred to as ‘jewel in the crown’ as it is surrounded by the Spenser Mountains. We have time for a stroll and a cuppa before we go to see the Wairau River headwaters and watch the transformation of the landscape from Lake Tennyson.

We take a break from our travels to have a picnic lunch at Tarndale Lakes. The subalpine tarns and small lakes are in one of the most isolated parts of Marlborough and sit at approximately 1000m above sea level. We have some time for a stroll around these unique lakes before we start our descent back into the Hanmer Basin through what was once one of New Zealand’s largest farms, St James Station.

Dinner tonight is at your leisure.

Day 4                  Saturday 19 March 2022
HANMER SPRINGS – CHRISTCHURCH          (BD)
After a relaxed breakfast this morning you can enjoy the infamous Hanmer Springs pools (own expense). If you decide not to have a soak, there will be plenty of time to wander through the Hanmer Springs village before we make our way to Christchurch. We have a brief tour of the city before you can explore the garden city at your leisure.

Tonight, we reflect over our adventures with a farewell group dinner at the restaurant.
Accommodation: Heartland Hotel Cotswold, Christchurch – 1 night1

Day 5                  Sunday 20 March 2022
