Monday 10 – Tuesday 18 October 2022 (9 Days)

Niue is a Pacific Island paradise; one of the smallest countries on earth and the largest raised coral atoll in the world. Known as the Rock of Polynesia, the name reflects the rugged nature of the island’s geological structure, but it does little to describe the lush green vegetation, the towering cliffs of Tepa Point, the clear blue waters offering an unprecedented opportunity to swim with migrating humpback whales, but most of all the friendly people. The slow and relaxed pace of life in Niue is the first thing that overwhelms you and the need to relax and unwind becomes your top priority.

Day 1                          Monday 10 October 2022
Our tour commences today with an overnight stay in Auckland to prepare for our early flight to Niue tomorrow morning. Tonight, we enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant, a perfect opportunity to meet our fellow travellers.
Accommodation: Heartland Hotel Auckland Airport, Auckland – 1 night
Day 2                          Tuesday 11 October 2022
We are transferred to Auckland Airport early this morning for our flight to Niue. As we enjoy a meal and movies onboard the 3.5-hour flight, we cross the international dateline and so literally travel back to the previous day, arriving in Niue on Monday 10 October.
Day 2 Continued…    Monday 10 October 2022
We land in the early afternoon and are met by our local guide who will introduce us to the island they call home over the coming week. Our guide will take us to the accommodation we will occupy for the next week, the Scenic Matavai Resort Niue. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to take a swim and unwind before dinner.

About our accommodation:
We are greeted by a spectacular 180-degree view of the magnificent Pacific Ocean at the Scenic Matavai Resort Niue. Perched on a coral cliff-top and nestled amongst lush tropical gardens, our premier resort accommodation takes full advantage of the unique environment. We enjoy a blend of Niuean influenced and European cuisine when we dine at the hotel’s in-house restaurant. The resort features two swimming pools, one where you can swim up to the Cliffhanger Pool Bar. Watch Spinner Dolphins and Humpback Whales (in season – usually July to October) cruise past the resort while you sip on a ‘speciality tropical fruit cocktail’ or an ice-cold beer on the resort terrace.
Accommodation: Scenic Matavai Resort, Niue – 7 nights
Day 3                          Tuesday 11 October 2022
After breakfast, we join our guide for a morning tour to some of Niue’s better-known spots on the western side of the atoll from Avatele to Hikutavake villages. Our island-born guide will give us a real taste of what their island is really like. They will allow a glimpse of the island’s history, its people and language, its flora and fauna and the connection it has to New Zealand. Noted for its expansive cliff-face and historical importance as a reserved bathing place for Niue's traditional kings, Matapa Chasm is reached by a track at the foot of Hikutavake Hill and beside the start of the trek to Talava Arches. Matapa Chasm provides a sheltered swimming spot to enjoy the unusual sensation of cool fresh water, filtered through the natural aquifer of Niue, floating on top of warm sea water, a swim here is optional. At the conclusion of our tour, we return to Matavai.  Tonight, we enjoy local seafood infused with Niuean flavours whilst watching the sunset and relaxing to live Niuean music at our resort.
Day 4                          Wednesday 12 October 2022
After breakfast, our guide will collect us for a vanilla and handcraft tour.  In the early 1950’s, missionaries on secondment from the United Kingdom were astonished to find the orchid growing wild on the Island. Surprisingly though, there were very few pods. So how did the plant get here and why so few beans? This tour will reveal all and more. Our guide will collect us and drive to Noga's vanilla plot at the village of Tuapa. Noga Bray is truly Niue’s Vanilla Queen; she grows, she pollinates, she harvests, and she cures her own beans. As we visit her plantation, we can ask her to let us in on some island secrets and anything else we might like to know about life in her village. Afterwards we enjoy lunch at Vaiolama in the main township of Alofi. We return to our resort for a swim and our afternoon is at leisure. Tonight, indulge in Niuean and Pacific Rim infused cuisine at its best. Learn all about the Niuean Coconut Crabs at the Uga presentation on the main deck and even get the chance to show how brave you are by holding the Uga!
Day 5                          Thursday 13 October 2022
This morning we travel south through the villages of Avatele, Vaiea, Hakupu, Liku and Lakepa. Our tour includes a drive through the coastal forest and to Hikulagi Sculpture Park where sculptures and art boards created by local artists are displayed. We arrive in Lakepa where our hosts tell us the history of their village, including their restored primary school as well as the skills of husking and drinking coconut. We are given the opportunity to taste some typical local snacks of coconut, pawpaw, and anything else that is in season. This is a great opportunity to learn about island life ranging from its history to the people, the language and culture. The return journey will be through the middle of the island back to Matavai. This afternoon is at leisure. Dinner tonight will be at Kaiika Restaurant, a Japanese restaurant.
Day 6                          Friday 14 October 2022
Today we have a day at leisure to wind down even more. Niue's greatest feature is its incredibly crystal clear water unlike anywhere else in the world, and the best way to enjoy this is an optional Swim with the Dolphins snorkel excursion which takes off in search of the resident Spinner Dolphins found all year round in Niue. Being gently towed alongside the boat, watch the dolphins play just metres away. Heading to the outer reef to one of Niue's best snorkel spots, abundant with Katuali (Niuean Sea Snakes), Parrotfish, a wide variety of reef fish and beautiful hard corals. This is a perfect opportunity to get up close to a wide variety of friendly marine life. (This tour is optional and not included in the main tour price - pre-booking is recommended). As an alternative you are welcome to play 9-holes at Niue’s Golf and Sports Club or enjoy a round of Bowls. This evening we enjoy dinner at Matavai Resort.
Day 7                          Saturday 15 October 2022
After breakfast, we have the option to attend a village show day in Niue. These are annual events hosted by each village and is almost like an A&P show in New Zealand, with a Niuean take on it. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Tonight, we reconvene as a group for dinner at the Matavai Resort.
Day 8                          Sunday 16 October 2022
After breakfast you will have the option to experience a church service at Avatele Village. Religion plays a very important part in the Niuean community so this will be a terrific opportunity for us to mix and mingle with the Niuean locals and indulge in their unique culture. The service will be in Niuean and will also include a light lunch hosted by Avatele Girls Brigade, followed by an afternoon at leisure. For those who do not wish to attend the church service, the day will be at leisure. Tonight, we will have a farewell dinner at the Matavai Resort.
Day 9                          Depart Niue Monday 17 October 2022
ARRIVE AUCKLAND Tuesday 18 October 2022 (B, FM)
After breakfast our guide will transfer us to the airport to commence our journey back to New Zealand. As we fly towards Auckland, we cross the international dateline again meaning that we arrive in Auckland in the late afternoon of Tuesday 18 October 2022
