Travel from Auckland along State Highway 1, the main state highway connecting Auckland with the south. Pass over the Bombay Hills, where market gardens supply home and export markets. Travel through some of New Zealand's richest farmland in the Waikato Valley and continue along the east bank of the Waikato River, the country's longest river. Pass through the coal-mining town of Huntly, and Ngaruawahia, home of the Maori King. Continue through rolling green pastures and small farming settlements before arriving in Waitomo. Enjoy a guided tour into the Ruakuri Cave which offers a comprehensive cave experience including winding passageways, immense caverns, and deep crevices. The tour commences with a spiral descent from ground level via a remarkable drum entrance and walkway then wanders along narrow corridors and across low-lit walkways suspended above the Huhunui River below. The tour takes approximately two hours and includes 1.6 kilometres of walkways. Our guide will bring us up close to glowworms, elaborate cave formations, underground rivers, myths, legends and sacred Maori sites. Departing Waitomo, travel through picturesque farmland and across the bush clad Mamaku Ranges to Rotorua in the heart of New Zealand’s famous thermal region. This evening visit Tamaki Maori Village for a Cultural Experience and Hangi Dinner. Experience the warmth of the Maori people during an evening of ceremonial rituals, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Enter the replica pre-European Maori village, witness the earth being scraped carefully away from the hangi pit and enter their ancestral Meeting House to relax as their family entertain us with a powerful cultural performance before dining on the traditional hangi buffet dinner (Maori feast) cooked the traditional Maori way in an earth oven.

Day 4 Sunday 11 April 2021
ROTORUA - TAUPO (B)
This morning we head south to the Waimangu Valley to visit this popular thermal reserve, the site of the famous Pink and White Terraces, which were destroyed in the volcanic eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886. The resulting 15km rift contains the Emerald Pool, a 5 hectare boiling lake, a seemingly bottomless blue steaming lake, and colourful silica terraces. Mt Tarawera rises to the east of the lake. While here we enjoy a guided walk through the volcanic valley where you will see the Frying Pan Lake, silica terraces and other activity. Continuing on towards Taupo we will stop at Aratiatia to see the opening of the dam gates forming the Aratiatia Rapids. There are a number of points to view the opening of the Aratiatia Dam gates. From the main car park you can walk 5-minutes to a choice of two different view-points or you can also view from the main Aratiatia bridge. From Aratiatia we travel into Taupo for you to purchase some lunch. This afternoon, we cruise to the famous Maori Rock Carvings and around the picturesque bays of Lake Taupo in style and comfort on a large catamaran. An informative commentary is given on the volcanic history and Maori mythology surrounding Lake Taupo, and we’ll enjoy a complimentary hot homemade muffin and tea/coffee as we take in the fabulous views of secluded bays and the spectacular snow-capped mountain peaks of the World Heritage Tongariro National Park. At the conclusion of our cruise we check into our overnight accommodation. Dinner tonight is at leisure. Taupo has an excellent array of restaurants located within walking distance from our hotel.
