Explore Northland and the Coromandel Peninsula. This tour gives you the opportunity to view the spectacular coastlines of the Northland beaches, the historical sites of Kerikeri and Russell, and natural wonders including forests, glowworm caves and waterfalls. In the Coromandel Peninsula we enjoy more golden beaches, including Hot Water Beach along with coastal villages and pleasant walks.

Day 1          Monday 4 April 2022
Departing Hamilton today we commence our travel north across the Auckland Harbour Bridge and past the lovely Pacific Coast beaches of Orewa and Waiwera.  Continue through picturesque farmlands to Matakohe for a visit to the excellent Matakohe Kauri Museum.  This award winning museum records the timber milling and gum digging pioneering days of the Northland region.  Afterwards we travel to Dargaville where we will stay overnight. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant in town.
Accommodation: Hobson’s Choice Motel, Dargaville – 1 night

Day 2          Tuesday 5 April 2022
Continuing our journey north we travel up Northland’s west coast skirting Kaipara Harbour and following the Kaihu River to Kai Iwi Lakes and the primeval forest of Waipoua, which translates as ‘water falling at night’.  We will arrive at our overnight accommodation on the Hokianga Harbour in the early afternoon. There will be time for you to relax and enjoy the magnificent views of the harbour and sand dunes before we have an early dinner at the hotel. This evening we will be collected from the hotel foyer for a 90 minute night tour into the Waipoua Forest to visit one of the oldest and largest known kauri trees in the world, Tane Mahuta (The lord of the forest).  Let the night noises, foreign environment, time, local Maori guides and ecological and cultural interpretation (Maori story, song and instruments) awaken your spiritual senses.
Accommodation: The Heads, Hokianga – 1 night

Day 3          Wednesday 6 April 2022
After a leisurely start this morning we commence our travel to the eastern coast of Northland. Our first stop for the day will be Kerikeri, a town with a rich and colourful history. While here we join a local guide for a tour of the Stone Store and Kemp House (Kerikeri Mission House).  The iconic Stone Store stands at the edge of the Kerikeri inlet, offering a unique experience with an interactive story space upstairs. See how the early settlers lived and learn about the building’s many lives as a trading post, library, barracks, school and general store. Built in 1822, Kemp House is the country’s oldest surviving building, surrounded by English-style cottage garden and orchards. Hear the story of the first missionary families and see their personal items and furniture preserved over the years. We’ll stop in Kerikeri for you to purchase your lunch before visiting Makana Confectionery, where you are able to sample their delicious hand made chocolates.  Continuing north we travel to the beautiful Doubtless Bay where we will stay for the next two nights. Dinner tonight will be at the resort.
Accommodation: Taipa Beach Resort, Taipa - 2 nights

Day 4          Thursday 7 April 2022
This morning we will board a Great Sights coach and visit the most northern point of New Zealand – Cape Reinga (Te Rerenga Wairua). On this full day tour by coach, uncover the wild beauty of this vast and untouched region that is rich in Māori culture and tradition. Enjoy a taste of New Zealand's varying and beautiful landscape: the rolling hills of Northland's rural countryside, breath-taking coastal views and native forest. We drive along the sand on Ninety Mile Beach as the waves crash beside the custom-built coach. Feel the sand between your toes as we help the driver guide dig for shellfish (conditions permitting). Our off-road journey continues up Te Paki Stream, stopping at the massive sand dunes where we can experience the thrills and spills of sand-boarding. Clambering up and surfing down the dunes (if you dare!) is sure to get the heart pumping. The highlight of the trip is visiting Cape Reinga where we hear the stories of this significant site where, according to Māori legend, spirits depart on their journey home to Hawaiki. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views, visit the iconic lighthouse, and see the point where the Tasman Sea and the mighty Pacific Ocean come crashing together. During our Cape Reinga tour we enjoy a delicious picnic lunch! Upon return at the resort, we dine in the resort restaurant.

Day 5          Friday 8 April 2022
Departing Taipa this morning we travel south into the heart of the Bay of Islands – Paihia. Here we will enjoy some leisure time in Paihia including time for lunch (own cost). We then travel to Kawiti Caves where we enjoy a guided tour. Our 30 minute guided tour will follow a wooden boardwalk through a 200 metre limestone cave system. Once inside, we will see thousands of glow worms spread across the ceiling surrounded by breath taking stalactites and stalagmites. As you enjoy the galaxies of glow worms above, our friendly guide will explain the life cycle of the New Zealand Glow worm (Arachnocampa Luminosa) and the intricate webs used to catch their prey. We’ll even get close enough to see the actual body of the glow worm and its stunning blue/green tail light. Continuing our journey we travel to Whangarei, where on arrival we will stop at Whangarei Falls, a 26m high waterfall surrounded by park and native New Zealand bush. We then proceed to check into our accommodation for the evening. Dinner tonight will be at our hotel.
Accommodation: Distinction Whangarei

Day 6          Saturday 9 April 2022
Today we commence our journey to Coromandel Town.  We travel on the road less travelled via Kumeu, a town which offers a refreshing blend of boutique wineries, orchards and rolling green farmland. We will stop here for you to purchase your lunch and browse their variety of boutique shops. Departing Kumeu, we travel along the South Western Motorway and through the Waterview Tunnel (touted as the biggest change to Auckland's roading network since the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1959) before travelling across the Hauraki Plains and along the Thames Coast Highway to Coromandel Town.  Formerly a gold-mining and timber town, Coromandel is now a haven for artists, craftspeople and conservationists. Tonight we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in town.
Accommodation: Anchor Lodge, Coromandel Town

Day 7          Sunday 10 April 2022
Departing our motel this morning, we travel the short distance to Driving Creek Railway. Enjoy a scenic ride in this open sided Driving Creek Railway train on its 3km narrow gauge track with three tunnels, two spirals, five reversing points and six viaducts originally constructed to retrieve clay for the local potter Barry Brickell. It now provides a wonderful ride through the thick regenerating Coromandel bush with a fantastic view at the mountain top terminus (The Eyefull Tower!). From Coromandel Town we’ll enjoy a scenic drive to Whitianga. Our first stop will be the small coastal settlement of Matarangi, the secluded sand spit that forms the northern edge of the Whangapoua Harbour. There will be time to stretch legs for those who want to stroll along the beach, bring your togs and enjoy a swim, or sit back and soak in the lovely ocean views.  We’ll also include our lunch stop here (there will be time to purchase something prior to departure in Coromandel Town). We continue our journey to Whitianga via the small settlement of Kuaotunu. On arrival in Whitianga, there will be the option of walking along the shores of Buffalo Beach into the town centre. For those not wishing to walk along the beach, your driver will take you into the town centre. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. You may wish to soak up the underground thermal minerals at The Lost Spring (additional cost). Tonight we will reconvene in town for a group dinner at a local restaurant.
Accommodation: Oceans Resort, Whitianga – 2 nights

Day 8          Monday 11 April 2022
This morning we travel by coach to Hahei, which is where we can access the world-famous stunning scenery at Cathedral Cove. Accessible only on foot or boat, famous Cathedral Cove is one of the “must visit” sites on The Coromandel. Today you have the option of walking (45 mins to 1 hour walk one way, 2.5km). This coastal walk takes you past quintessential Coromandel scenery of pohutukawa trees and white sandy beaches. As well as Cathedral Cove itself, there are many beautiful places to explore along the way including Gemstone Bay and Stingray Bay. For those who do not wish to walk, we will ride the Cathedral Cove Water Taxi to Cathedral Cove. We will travel back to Hahei as a group onboard the water taxi (subject to the water taxi operating).  For those who don’t wish to complete the walk but still would like to see Cathedral Cove, you can prebook on the Hahei Explorer (additional cost, must be prebooked). On arrival back in Hahei we will have time to purchase lunch in the village before travelling to Hot Water Beach. Tides permitting, time will be available here for those wanting to bathe your feet in the warm water. We then travel to Cooks Beach where you have the option of catching the short ferry ride back to Whitianga and walking back to our accommodation or travel back via coach with the driver. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 9          Tuesday 12 April 2022
Today our odyssey continues as we travel south along the Pacific Coast Highway to Tairua, one of the best kept secrets of the Coromandel. Here we will have time to browse the village, which offers a charming taste of the laid-back coastal lifestyle with a nice mix of boutique shops. We then travel the short distance to the settlement of Pauanui, is a purpose-built holiday community, which lies across the harbour from Tairua. It features Pauanui Waterways, the country’s first canal housing development. We will take a drive around the village before stopping for lunch (own cost) in the village centre. After lunch we continue driving along the Pacific Coast Highway to the popular beach resort of Whangamata. Famous for its unique combination of beach and rainforest, Whangamata's amazing ocean beach provides some of the best surfing breaks, yet safest swimming in the country. We will have time available here for an afternoon cuppa along the beachfront, before having time to browse through the local shops. From here we check into our accommodation for the evening. Dinner tonight will be at the Whangamata RSA.
