Fieldays presents New Zealand’s agricultural and primary sectors with a marketplace to advance agriculture, while honouring their three pillars – innovation, education, globalisation. There is plenty to see and do while at Fieldays including viewing demonstrations and live shows, learning about the latest ground breaking innovations to shopping the specials on offer during the event. There is a variety of food stalls available to purchase lunch today.  At the conclusion of the day we return by coach to Rotorua. Dinner tonight will be at our hotel.

Day 3          Thursday 16 June 2022
WAIKATO SIGHTSEEING          (BL)
Travel across the bush-clad Mamaku Ranges and across picturesque farmlands to the Matamata region.  We experience the real Middle-earth with a guided visit to Hobbiton Movie Set, the setting for The Shire that featured in the Peter Jackson directed films, ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy and more recently, ‘The Hobbit’.  Our tour commences with a drive through the picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges.  Our guide will escort us walking through the ten-acre site recounting fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created.  The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, The Mill House and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and we will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth.  Upon completion of our tour enjoy a complimentary beverage in the Green Dragon Inn then return to The Shires Rest. From Hobbiton we travel the short distance to the Red Barn where we enjoy a scrumptious country-style lunch featuring delicious local produce. Following lunch, we experience a 60-minute guided tour of a traditional Waikato working dairy farm. We are given a pair of ‘Red Band’ gumboots and board a purpose-built farm trailer and take a tractor/trailer ride through the picturesque Waikato A2 dairy farm down to the milking shed. Our guide will provide us with an informative commentary and if the timing is right we may get to meet the farm manager Alan and Blossom his favourite cow, and watch the milking shed in action. We depart the Red Barn and retrace our steps to Rotorua. Tonight is at leisure.

Day 4          Friday 17 June 2022
ROTORUA – TAUPO – ROTORUA          (B)
Leaving Rotorua we drive through the Kaingaroa State Forest, one of the largest planted forests in the world, to Taupo. We make a stop at Aratiatia to see the opening of the dam gates forming the Aratiatia Rapids. There are a number of points to view the opening of the Aratiatia Dam gates. There is a 5-minute walk to a choice of two different view-points or we can view from the main Aratiatia bridge. Once we have viewed the rapids, we travel the short distance to view the impressive Huka Falls and marvel as the mighty Waikato River thunders through the narrow canyon. We stop in Taupo where there will be time to purchase lunch (own cost).  This afternoon enjoy a scenic boat cruise on Lake Taupo.  A full commentary is given on the history of Lake Taupo as we cruise out of the Taupo marina. Take in the picturesque views of secluded bays and the mountain peaks of Tongariro National Park as we cruise to view the Maori Rock Carvings, historical points of interest in Whakaipo Bay and on a clear day the majestic volcanoes of Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro can be seen at the southern end of the lake.  At the conclusion of our scenic boat cruise, we retrace our journey back to Rotorua. The remainder of the evening is at leisure.
