We start our journey with a flight from Auckland to Dunedin. Founded in 1848, Dunedin was designed to resemble Edinburgh by its Scottish Founders. Upon arrival, we are taken on a brief tour of the city, taking in the numerous towers, turrets and stone buildings that make up this historic city. We enjoy a welcome dinner tonight at the hotel.

Accommodation: The Victoria Hotel, Dunedin – 1 night

After breakfast this morning, we travel south through the Southern Scenic Route of the Catlins. Before departing Dunedin, we will purchase lunch (own cost) to eat later today. The Catlins is an area full of native forests, fringed by high cliffs and golden beaches. This spectacular coastal stretch is home to an array of marine life – sea lions are regular beach visitors while dolphins frolic in the shallows and a variety of sea and forest birds sing in the trees. We travel through this area stopping along the way to visit Pounawea, and Purakaunui Falls situated amongst lush podocarp and beech forest. We also visit Curio Bay and walk amongst the Petrified Forest before arriving in Invercargill where we stay for the next two nights. Tonight we enjoy a group dinner at our hotel.

This signpost has featured in thousands of traveller’s photographs and is also the starting point for a number of short scenic walks on Bluff Hill peninsula.
