Saturday 29 October – Wednesday 02 November 2022 (5 Days)

Taranaki is full of private and public gardens that are showcased during the Taranaki Garden Festival. We visit as many gardens as well can during our getaway to this west coast town, taking inspiration from many decades of design and cultivation to bring back to our own gardens.

Day 1             Saturday 29 October 2022
Today we travel to New Plymouth along State Highway 3 via Te Kuiti, and the Awakino Gorge Road to Mokau.  After enjoying lunch here (own cost), we continue on to New Plymouth where we visit our first garden; Pukekura Park. Located in the heart of New Plymouth City, this 52-hectare park has an amazing range of both native and exotic plants all displayed in a natural setting with many wonderful views and vistas of the lakes and Mount Taranaki. Tonight, we enjoy a group dinner at the hotel.
Accommodation: Auto Lodge Motor Inn, New Plymouth – 4 nights

Day 2             Sunday 30 October 2022
After breakfast this morning, we enjoy a city sights tour of New Plymouth featuring the gardens of this unique town. Our first garden visit for the day is the historical Tupare Gardens. Developed in 1932, Tūpare is a premier landscaped garden with a unique homestead, originally developed by Sir Russell Matthews and his family. Walking through the winding path sculpted on the hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, we find stately trees, deciduous maples, rhododendrons, hydrangeas and much more, that were all carefully planted by Sir Russell. This afternoon we visit Pukeiti Gardens, a 360-hectare rainforest property located between Mount Taranaki and the coast.  Established in 1951, Pukeiti is an internationally recognised garden and plant collection renowned for rhododendrons, Pukeiti also features sub-tropical vireyas, magnolia, pieris, and many other varieties for all-year-round interest. If time allows, we stop at a local garden or two on our way back to the hotel. On arrival back in New Plymouth we are free to explore the city and to enjoy dinner at leisure at a local restaurant.

Day 3              Monday 31 October 2022
During the festival, a selection of private gardens become open to the public in the surrounding towns of Inglewood, Stratford, Hawera and Manaia. Today we visit a selection of these gardens, depending on which ones are participating in the festival, each unique and different from one another. Tonight, dinner is at leisure to allow you to experience more local delights.

Day 4              Tuesday 01 November 2022
Today we explore more of the private gardens open for the festival, learning stories and gathering inspiration to take back to our own gardens. After spending the day surrounded by the beauty of these gardens, we enjoy a farewell dinner back at the hotel.

Day 5              Wednesday 02 November 2022
Before departing New Plymouth this morning, we visit the stunning Te Rewa Rewa Bridge for a photo stop. The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is reminiscent of a breaking wave or a whale skeleton and on a clear day, the arches of the bridge frame Mount Taranaki spectacularly in the distance. We retrace our journey north through the towns of Mokau, Piopio, Te Kuiti and Te Awamutu.
