Join us on a tour that explores the wonderful coastal delights of Northland. We travel up the East Coast visiting beautiful beaches and bays learning the history of the areas that we will visit. Experience local attractions along the way including an excursion through crystal blue waters to Poor Knights Marine Reserve. After reaching Cape Reinga at the most northern tip of New Zealand, we journey back down the West Coast, across harbours, through forests and along rugged coastlines.

Please note: A reasonable level of fitness and agility will be required to comfortably enjoy and complete this tour with safety.

Day 1              Tuesday 08 November 2022
Departing early this morning we travel north and along the Hibiscus Coast Highway passing through small coastal suburbs until we travel inland to Puhoi. On arrival, we visit the Puhoi Valley Cheese shop and café. There will be time available to purchase lunch (own cost) at the onsite café.  Next, we visit the Puhoi Heritage Museum and Village and learn about the unique history of Puhoi from its Bohemian/Māori foundations in the 1860s to the present day. This afternoon we travel further north to the Mahurangi Peninsula where our overnight accommodation is in the coastal hideaway of Snell’s Beach. A welcome dinner is included at our accommodation.
Accommodation: The Salty Dog Inn, Snell’s Beach – 1 night

Day 2              Wednesday 09 November 2022
This morning we travel to Matakana for a visit to Sculptureum to see the stunning sculpture gardens and art galleries onsite before visiting the Morris & James Pottery. A Matakana institution, Morris & James was established in 1977 by Ant Morris, and today is run by over 15 artisans and crafts people. There is time here to browse a selection of colourful ceramics, pots, home décor and gardenware, all created on-site. Afterwards travel through Mangawhai Village and along the Welcoming Coast to Waipu where we stop for afternoon tea and a visit to the Waipu Museum. Here discover how Gaelic speaking emigrants from the Western Highlands of Scotland escaped the notorious Highland Clearances and eventually arrived in “the virtual paradise” of Waipu. Continuing north, we pass through Whangarei before arriving at the Tutukaka Coast. Dinner is included in the hotel restaurant tonight.
Accommodation: The Quality Hotel Oceans Tutukaka – 2 nights

Day 3              Thursday 10 November 2022

Today, we board a multi-deck luxurious vessel for a full day excursion to The Poor Knights Marine Reserve, with crystal clear waters and an abundance of sea life. With a professional skipper, and friendly crew we cruise on an ocean journey to the islands, on a fully-licensed and surveyed boat. There are many hidden harbors to explore, so we will always be sheltered and comfortable. Whilst at the Poor Knights Islands we visit the inside of the world’s largest sea cave. A delicious buffet lunch is served onboard including free tea, coffee, and soups before returning to shore. This evening is at leisure and our accommodation is within walking distance to local eateries.

The Gallery & Cafe are set in a lush subtropical garden with magnificent bush and sea views over Helena Bay and there will be time to wander the sculpture garden and visit the gallery onsite which displays a wide range of New Zealand artists.  We finish the afternoon at the boutique vineyard of Omata Estate Winery where we can enjoy wine tasting while overlooking the ocean, before checking in to our accommodation in Paihia. This evening is at leisure to dine in one of the local restaurants.

Day 5             Saturday 12 November 2022
Today we travel to Doubtless Bay. Visit Butler Point, which features a Whaling Museum, acknowledged as one of the most comprehensive private museums of its kind in New Zealand; Butler House, the residence of Captain William Butler built in 1847; and with Gardens of exotic and native flora, including extensive stands of ancient Pohutukawa trees which have been recognised as a Garden of Significance. For lunch we stop at the Famous Fish and Chip shop in the fishing village of Mangōnui - the main centre of Doubtless Bay. Once a busy whaling and trading town, Mangōnui has a collection of charming 150 year-old buildings that now house cafés, art and craft shops. We have time this afternoon to meander along the coast of Doubtless Bay. To the west of Mangōnui is Coopers Beach; home to pohutukawa-lined golden sands, gentle waves and safe swimming and we’ll have the chance to sample the delicious ice cream at Cable Bay (own cost), known for its pink-sand beach. In 1769 Captain James Cook looked in on this expanse of water and declared it was "doubtless a bay". Beach after beach of luxurious caramel and white sands make it a popular place to swim, snorkel, fish, and sail. We then visit Matthews Vintage Collection to view a privately owned collection of vintage cars and machinery used in farming and dating back to the early 1900’s. The collection has been accumulated and restored by an avid vintage enthusiast for more than 50 years and covers over 1100 square metres of display area. We travel up the Karikari Peninsula to our accommodation for the next two nights at Carrington Estate. Spread over four breathtaking kilometres of secluded white sand coastline, the resort features an ocean-side 18-hole championship golf course, and 900-acres of restored wetlands with a pool and winery onsite. Dinner tonight is included at the Winery Restaurant with views overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Accommodation: Carrington Estate – 2 nights

Day 6             Sunday 13 November 2022
Today we enjoy a full day tour to Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s northern-most point. Travel along 90 Mile Beach to see the rugged views of the West Coast before stopping at the giant sand dunes of Te Paki and drive up the infamous quicksand stream before reaching Cape Reinga. Known to the Māori as "Te Rerenga Wairua”, it is there that the souls of the departed undertake their final journey to Hawaiki, the land of their ancestors. A short walk leads to the iconic WWII lighthouse and the famous signpost pointing to cities around the world. Enjoy spectacular views of Cape Maria Van Diemen and watch the division line where the Tasman Sea turquoise waters clash fiercely with the Pacific Ocean’s darker blue waves. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Tapotupotu Bay on the eastern side of Cape Reinga before returning to our accommodation. Dinner is included in the hotel restaurant.

Day 7              Monday 14 November 2022
Travelling from the East Coast to the West Coast, we stop in Kaitaia to visit the Museum at Te Ahu. Treasures among the pre-European Māori collection include pounamu, early carvings, and the 500-year-old skeletal remains of the extinct Kuri (Polynesian dog).  Other major themes are gum digging and the Dalmatians, kauri gum and timber, early shipwrecks, and missionary pioneers. It is the proud home of the first European item left in New Zealand, the mighty de Surville anchor. Travel over the Mangamuka Gorge and down the West Coast to the Hokianga Harbour, where we cross by ferry to the small settlement of Rawene where we have time to purchase lunch and wander through the boutique township. This afternoon we visit Manea Footprints of Kupe – this is a 75-minute multi-sensory journey of guided storytelling expressed through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction, and the splendour of Hokianga’s natural surroundings. Check in to our waterfront accommodation where we have time to rest before dinner is served in the hotel restaurant.
Accommodation: The Heads Hokianga – 1 night
Day 8             Tuesday 15 November 2022
After breakfast we depart down the wild West Coast and journey through the Waipoua Forest. As the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland, Waipoua is an ancient green world of towering trees and rare birds. The highway through the forest is memorable for the natural gateways created by huge kauri trees and the fringing of colourful ferns along the road's edge. We stop here to visit Tāne Mahuta, the country's largest kauri tree, which is approximately 2,000 years old, and still growing. Nearly 18-metres to the first branch and 4.4 metres in diameter, Tāne Mahuta is rightly called 'The Lord of the Forest'. Departing the Waipoua Forest, we begin our journey back to Hamilton, arriving in the early evening.
