Day 2 Friday 12 November 2021
WAITOMO & OTOROHANGA SIGHTSEEING (B)
This morning we commence our sightseeing around the Waikato region. Our first stop is a short drive out of Hamilton to Zealong Tea Estate, the only commercial tea estate in New Zealand. Here we enjoy the Discover Tea Tour and tasting. Our tour guide leads us along the tea trail through the history of tea as we explore the unique sculptures and scenic stops to learn how tea is picked and processed. A ceremonial Zealong tea tasting teaches the art of tea appreciation, of appearance, aroma, and taste, followed by a Signature High Tea at the Tea House overlooking the Estate. We then travel south to Waitomo, an area well known for its underground caves. We stop in at Otorohanga en route for you to purchase your lunch (own cost). On arrival in Waitomo, we visit Caveworld, for a guided tour of Footwhistle Cave. This small group tour includes some of the most beautiful natural scenery in Waitomo. On arrival we take a short walk through breathtaking native forest past waterfalls to the cave entrance. There, we will walk down into the cave through a natural chasm. Please note there are approximately 150 stairs down to the cave. The scene is set for an intimate cave experience, the solar powered lights are kept low so we can appreciate the magnificent glowworm displays at their best, only inches away. Around a corner lie the bones of one of New Zealand’s lost treasures, the ancient Moa. Be sure to bring your camera as we will be able to take photos and our guide will also be able to help us out with the best camera settings to get the best pictures. Complete the tour by enjoying a complimentary Kawakawa tea whilst we relax in the ponga hut nestled in native forest and surrounds. After our visit in Waitomo, we retrace our steps back to Otorohanga to visit the famous Otorohanga Kiwi House & Native Bird Park, a beautiful park-like surroundings contain New Zealand's largest public collection of kiwi and other indigenous species. Here you have a chance to get up close and personal to a wonderful range of the native birds as well as three types of Kiwi (Northern Brown Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi and Little Spotted Kiwi), Morepork, Falcon, Weka, Tui, Kereru, Kaka and Kea. From Otorohanga we travel back to Hamilton. Tonight you have plenty of selection to dine at one of Hamilton’s many restaurant offerings within walking distance of the hotel.
Day 3 Saturday 13 November 2021
Today we head towards the West Coast of the North Island to the seaside town of Raglan. We will take a slight detour and visit Bridal Veil Falls on our way where there is a short 10 minute easy walk through native forest to the viewpoint for the spectacular 55m falls. There are two further viewpoints of the falls, but are only accessible by stairs (approx 300 to the bottom viewpoint). We continue our journey into Raglan and travel straight to the wharf. From here we board the Wahinemoe for a private cruise on the Whaingaroa Harbour. With over 122-kms of coastline the Raglan, Whaingaroa Harbour has many stunning features, views, stories and activities to enjoy. Relax as we sail past the ancient limestone rock formations while the captain and crew share tales of the areas history. Witness the bird and marine life in their natural habitat. We’ll also enjoy a delicious fish and chip lunch while on board the Wahinemoe. Disembarking off the boat, there will be time for you to explore the township with an interesting variety of shops, cafes and galleries. There will also be time available for those who wish to go for an early summer swim (remember your swimwear!). We then retrace our steps back to Hamilton, and the remainder of the evening is at leisure.
Day 4 Sunday 14 November 2021
HOBBITON & SANCTUARY MOUNTAIN (B)
We have an earlier start this morning as we travel to Hobbiton Movie Set and enjoy their Second Breakfast Guided Tour. We’ll make the first footsteps in the morning dew on the Movie Set as part of Hobbiton’s first tour of the day. Our Hobbiton tour guide will escort us through the 12 acre movie set, recounting fascinating details from filming the trilogies and pointing out the most iconic sites and scenes as we walk through the movie set. We then arrive in to The Green Dragon™ Inn where you will be offered a complimentary beverage from their exclusive Hobbit™ Southfarthing™ range. We then follow our guide back over the double arch stone bridge to The Millhouse, where we are treated to a breakfast spread fit for a Hobbit. The breakfast table will be heaped with seasonal fresh fruit, breads, pastries, preserves and cold meats. A hot breakfast selection featuring an assortment of a Hobbit's favourite breakfast staples including fluffy scrambled eggs, streaky bacon, potatoes, grilled sausages and rosemary mushrooms will be available. At the conclusion of breakfast we make our way back through the wandering paths of The Shire and say goodbye to Hobbiton. From Hobbiton, we travel to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a mainland ecological island. Surrounded by one of the world’s longest pest-proof fences, Sanctuary Mountain’s ancient forest offers a sanctuary for populations of many of our most endangered species such as birds, skinks, geckos, frogs, bats, and insects. Here we are taken on a guided tour around the southern enclosure by one of their passionate guides. Witness the striking pest-free native forest dominated by towering tawa, rewarewa, pukatea, rimu and a wide variety of characteristic ferns. Listen to the birdsong, take in the majesty of the indigenous forest and try to spot the numerous bird species which make the maunga - mountain their home. Spend time in the clearing where cheeky New Zealand forest parrots - the kaka - like to hang out then take an optional walk up the viewing tower for a unique perspective of the forest canopy from above. After our tour at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari we travel back into Hamilton where the remainder of the day is at leisure.
