Day 2 Sunday 25 April 2021
WELLINGTON ANZAC DAY (BD)
Since opening on 18 April 2015, tens of thousands have visited Pukeahu National War Memorial Park to reflect on their own personal experience and to acknowledge New Zealand’s contribution to military conflict and peacekeeping missions throughout the world. On Anzac Day, Pukeahu will host a number of events. We rise early this morning allowing those who wish to attend the 6am Dawn Service, then return to our hotel for breakfast, before embarking on a Wellington City Tour including a visit to Te Papa for a ‘Fabulous Te Papa’ guided tour. This ninety-minute tour will focus on the treasures or ‘taonga’ of New Zealand and covers exhibition highlights from the natural environment, Maori culture and treasures, art and colonial history. Time also to explore Te Papa independently - view the exhibition “Gallipoli” open to visitors on ANZAC Day. ‘Gallipoli: The Scale of Our War’ combines the world of museums with the world-class creative artistry of Weta Workshops to immerse you in the eight-month Gallipoli campaign. This ground-breaking exhibition tells the story through the eyes and words of eight ordinary New Zealander’s who found themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Each is captured frozen in a moment of time on a monumental scale - 2.4 times human size. Cutting edge technology was used to create 3-D maps and projections, miniatures, models, dioramas and a range of experiences that bring New Zealand’s Gallipoli story to life.
Day 3 Monday 26 April 2021
WELLINGTON – WHANGANUI (BD)
Leaving Wellington, travel along the pretty Kapiti Coast looking out for Kapiti Island off shore from Paraparaumu then onto Levin for an early morning tea. Continuing we reach Foxton to first of all view the Foxton Beach, to see the contrasting scenery between the Kapiti Coast seen only a few hours earlier, then we visit the De Molen Windmill – opened in 2003 it is a replica of a traditional 17th Century Dutch flour mill. Next we travel inland to Palmerston North to visit the New Zealand Rugby Museum. Founded by John Sinclair and modeled after the Trophy Room in Cardiff Arms Park in Wales, the museum's collections include equipment, clothing, books, photographs, trophies, badges and almost everything else related to the game. If Rugby isnt your thing then the New Zealand Rugby Museum is within the Civic Centre and adjacent to the Te Manawa cultural complex - Te Manawa is a museum, art gallery and science centre in Palmerston North, New Zealand. This afternoon we travel from Palmerston North to Whanganui (Wanganui for those not used to seeing an H in the name), via Bulls. On arrival we have a quick look around the city then check into our accommodation for the next two nights.
Accommodation: Kingsgate Hotel, Whanganui – 2 nights
Day 4 Tuesday 27 April 2021
Following breakfast we tour the city before a visit to the Paddle Steamer Museum, which gives us an insight of the areas river transport history. From the past to the present - we board the PS Waimarie for a lunch cruise on the Whanganui River. This afternoon we discover more about what Wanganui has to offer. Located opposite the Whanganui City Bridge at the bottom of Victoria Avenue, the Durie Hill pedestrian tunnel leads to the historic Durie Hill Elevator. Built in 1919 it is the only earthbound elevator in New Zealand and one of only two in the world. Two viewpoints are located at the top, one above the elevator’s machinery room and the other on the nearby Memorial Tower. The 33.5 metre Memorial Tower is built from fossilised shell rock and offers excellent views of the city, Mounts Taranaki and Ruapehu and the Tasman Sea. A walkway beside the Elevator Tower offers an alternative route descending 191 steps to the City Bridge.
Day 5 Wednesday 28 April 2021
WHANGANUI – NEW PLYMOUTH (BD)
Following the coast from Whanganui heading Northwest our first stop today is to visit the impressive Tawhiti Museum – an impressive visual history of South Taranaki. Tawhiti Museum is a truly unique enterprise. The creation of artist Nigel Ogle, its attention to detail is simply stunning. Widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country, the museum uses life size exhibits and scale models to present our heritage in a series of super realistic and engaging displays. All these displays are designed and built on the premises in the 'Body Shop' and accompanying studios, which can be viewed as part of a museum visit. After this visit, continue on to Stratford. Stratford is located in the heart of Taranaki, and is the gateway to Mt Taranaki / Egmont, Egmont National Park, and the Forgotten World Highway. Stratford is nestled at the junction of two major roads (SH3 and SH43), and sits on the banks of the Patea River. It is known for its Shakespearean theme and stunning parks and gardens. It is here we view Stratford's glockenspiel which is unique in New Zealand. The glockenspiel plays a scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet four times daily (at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm) with figures made by the curator of the Tawhiti Museum, Nigel Ogle. The glockenspiel performs for approximately 5 minutes, after the hour chimes are finished. We continue onto New Plymouth the main city for Taranaki region but before arriving into the city we head north to get a photo of the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge across the Waiwhakaiho River at the northern end of New Plymouth's Coastal Walkway. Its spectacular shape and setting make it a popular landmark. The 83m long bridge is reminiscent of a breaking wave or a whale skeleton.
Accommodation: The Devon Hotel, New Plymouth – 2 nights
Day 6 Thursday 29 April 2021
AROUND NEW PLYMOUTH (BD)
This morning we visit the Pukekura Park As a world renowned gem, Pukekura Park offers in season splashes of Azaleas and Rhododendrons among native flora and waterways. The park contains stunning fernery and display houses. We also visit Puke Ariki. The story of Taranaki, the mountain, is one of passion, conflict and drama. So it is with Taranaki, the place; a region of legendary struggles and challenges. Here, on the western bump of New Zealand's North Island, the colossal forces of Mount Taranaki and the wild Tasman Sea have shaped the geography, climate and people. All these tales unfold at Puke Ariki – a united museum, library and visitor information centre for Taranaki. This afternoon we enjoy a scenic drive along State Highway 45, also known as the Surf Highway. Surf Highway 45 follows the stunning Taranaki coastline through many of NZ's best surfing spots, including Ohawe Beach, Opunake, Okato and Oakura.
Day 7 Friday 30 April 2021
NEW PLYMOUTH – HOME CITIES (B)
After breakfast this morning we depart New Plymouth following State Highway 3, travelling through lush forest and over Mount Messenger and through the Awakino gorge. Head inland and pass through small country towns such as Piopio and Te Kuiti before passing through Otorohanga. Already well known as the home of New Zealand's original Kiwi House, Otorohanga extended its "Kiwi Connection" theme to include all things "Kiwiana". Kiwiana is a celebration of New Zealand's popular culture – its icons, heroes and traditions – everything from the Kiwi, Buzzy Bee, Paua and Pavlova, to Sir Edmund Hillary, Colin Meads and the All Blacks, from shearing and sheep dog trials to the haka and Hokey Pokey icecream. There are 24 Kiwiana display modules in the Otorohanga shopping precinct – 14 of the exhibits are located in the Ed Hillary Walkway – the remaining 10 are displayed in shop windows nearby. After a drive through town to spot these kiwiana icons we will visit the world famous Kiwi House & Native Bird Park, a beautiful park-like surroundings contain New Zealand's largest public collection of kiwi and other indigenous species. Here you have a chance to get up close and personal to a wonderful range of the native birds as well as three types of Kiwi (Northern Brown Kiwi, Great Spotted Kiwi and Little Spotted Kiwi), Morepork, Falcon, Weka, Tui, Kereru, Kaka and Kea.
