Our coach will guide us through the unusual combination of skyscrapers and colonial architecture, among them the iconic Parliament House, St Mary’s Cathedral and Government House. We are treated to spectacular views over the city and river from Kings Park. Wander through Federation Walkway where we might get a glimpse at the famous wildflowers dotted throughout the park. Late morning, we travel to the port city of Fremantle. The town is full of well-preserved heritage including the convict built colonial era buildings, the old jetty and the prison. We enjoy lunch at Cicerello’s, a West Australian icon, where they have spent over 100 years perfecting the best fish ‘n’ chips. Then we step behind the bars as we explore Fremantle’s Prison history on a guided tour of the Gaol. This evening we enjoy dinner at the European Hotel.

One of the highlights of our tour will be a visit to the truly remarkable Nambung National Park. Here we see the famous Pinnacles that rise out of the yellow sand dunes. The limestone pillars, standing up to two metres tall, are one of the state’s foremost natural wonders. We follow the coast road through Jurien, Green Head and Dongara. As we head towards Geraldton, we stop for a photo opportunity of the Greenough Trees. This area is characterised by river red gums which have given up defying the prevailing winds and bent themselves almost parallel to the earth in an attempt to escape the salt and wind blowing off the Indian Ocean. As we arrive in Geraldton, we visit St Francis Xavier Cathedral and stop at the HMAS Sydney Memorial. After walking around the monument, we take the scenic coastal road where scenery is nothing short of spectacular as we arrive in Kalbarri. Dinner tonight is included at our resort.
Accommodation: The Edge Resort Kalbarri – 2 nights

Day 5              Thursday 18 August 2022

Wake up to the smell of fresh sea air and take the opportunity for a leisurely walk on the beach after breakfast. Mid-morning, we join Kalbarri Wilderness Cruises to experience the wilderness of Murchison River. Relax and take in the tranquillity of the river while spotting a native bird or two. Back on dry land, have your camera ready as we see Natures Window, a natural rock arch which frames the river perfectly. We dine in the resort restaurant tonight.

Nowadays the town relies heavily on its tourism industry. On our travels, we see some fantastic views from the Harold Holt Base, Vlaming Lighthouse (where we may spot some Whales), Exmouth Beach and the Communications Towers. Spend time wandering the centre, viewing models of the platforms and interesting displays or sit down and enjoy the award-winning film conveying the story of the gas project. We enjoy our picnic lunch today as we explore Point Samson and the towns in between. We visit Cossack, a town with a chequered past. Eventually the town was abandoned and the local industry dissolved and was left in ruins. Today many fine stone buildings have been fully restored to provide an informative and memorable insight into the town’s history. We dine in the hotel restaurant tonight.

This is one of the remotest parts of Australia with no settlement along the roadside other than a couple of service stations. With the Indian Ocean on our left and the Great Sandy Desert to our right, we travel more than 600 kilometers after Port Hedland without a town to be seen! But what a surprise when we get to Broome! After more than 2200 kilometres since we left Perth, we are now in tropical Australia and a modern oasis that began its life as a pearling centre.
