Friday 15 – Monday 18 July 2022 (4 Days)

Napier’s Winter Art Deco Festival attracts visitors keen to partake in all things vintage. Themed activities vary from year to year but always include polished vintage cars, jazz music, sequins, flapper dresses and fedoras. Our tour includes a beautiful dinner at the historic Mission Estate Winery, a guided tour of Napier and key art deco buildings in a vintage Art Deco car, and plenty of time to enjoy the festival activities.

Day 1          Friday 15 July 2022
JOURNEY TO NAPIER          (D)
We commence our first morning travelling through the rich Waikato countryside as we travel to Taupo, where you will have the opportunity to purchase lunch (own cost).  After lunch we depart Taupo and travel across the Rangitaiki Plains to Hawkes Bay, and the seaside city of Napier.  The city was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt during the period when Art Deco architecture was fashionable.  Napier now wears the moniker of ‘Art Deco City’ with pride.  The area is also one of New Zealand’s top grape growing regions with some of the country’s best-known wines coming from the Hawkes Bay. On arrival, we will have an orientation tour of the city before making our way to our hotel for the evening. Tonight we will enjoy a delicious dinner at our hotel. This evening there will be festival events available for you to attend (own cost/own booking). These will be confirmed when the festival programme is released.
Accommodation: Scenic Hotel Te Pania, Napier – 3 nights

Day 2          Saturday 16 July 2022
NAPIER          (B)
Today is at leisure to enjoy the Art Deco Winter festivities. A programme with the list of events will be available once it has been released. The winter programme has previously featured everything from a stylish ball, a vintage absinthe cocktail evening, world-class jazz performances, a casino night, dining experiences at Napier's Art Deco restaurants, along with fashion, radio plays and polished vintage cars. These activities will be your own cost/own booking.

Day 3          Sunday 17 July 2022
NAPIER          (BD)
After breakfast this morning we travel over to Hastings to view the art deco buildings around the city. Our first stop will be the Hawkes Bay Farmers Market, a place where the region's finest growers and artisan producers supply their wares so you can buy direct from the source. Meet the growers and producers as you wander at your leisure around this traditional farmers’ market, discovering the diverse range of fresh produce and genuine artisan products grown and produced in Hawke’s Bay. Our next stop will be Birdwoods, offering a gallery, sculpture garden, and old-fashioned sweet shop. We travel back to Napier in the early afternoon and the remainder of the day is for you to enjoy the Winter Art Deco festivities. Tonight we travel out to Mission Estate Winery for a delicious 3-course dinner. The restaurant is located in an historic building overlooking Napier and Hawkes Bay. Built in 1880, it was known as La Grande Maison or the "big house" and became the home for the early French Marists for three decades.

Day 4          Monday 18 July 2022
JOURNEY FROM NAPIER          (B)
This morning we experience a guided tour on-board a magnificently restored Art Deco Vehicle. The experienced chauffeur will give us a light-hearted guided tour of Napier where we will learn about its intriguing history and fascinating highlights. After our tour we depart Napier and travel through the Esk Valley and over the Kaimanawa Ranges to Taupo, where we have time available to browse the local town centre and purchase lunch. After our stop we continue north on State Highway 1 through the timber towns of Tokoroa and Putaruru then drive across the farmlands of the Waikato and arrive in Hamilton.
